Welcome! Please enjoy this virtual look round our club – but, better still, why not come and visit us? Founded over 140 years ago, we’re an open-membership, family-centred club with our own ground in Pollok Park on Glasgow’s southside, members coming from all backgrounds, and from across ethnic and cultural spectra, all taking an active part in club life. As well as year-round competitive and social cricket for juniors and adults, there are internal and outside seating areas, and a well-appointed clubhouse complete with bar and lounge area, function room, and gym.
In addition to year round cricket, the club has a unique six-hole golf course, created over 100 years ago, and recognised by the The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. It also has a busy and popular fitness section – Bodyfit Camp – that runs year-round fitness classes, and uses the club’s well-appointed fitness gym.

The 144th Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) of the club, as intimated to members in President Kenneth Robertson’s New Year newsletter, will be held on Wednesday the 25th of January, starting at 7pm. The meeting will be held on Zoom, to again facilitate as many people attending as possible, and meeting log-in details will be circulated, as will meeting papers, nearer the time. All members are invited, and encouraged, to attend the AGM.

East Kilbride visited “Shawholm” this evening, to take on the Under 14s in the final league match of season 2022. In a match reduced to sixteen overs-a-side, it was the Under 14s who batted first. Led by two retirements – from Musa Rana (19*) and Abdullah Arif (8*) – and Ubaif Asif’s 10, the side posted 75 for 3 in their allotted overs. Rana’s 19* included a boundary 4, and big slog-swept maximum that landed in the Police Dog training field! Well batted. For East Kilbride, the standout bowler was Bajaj, who returned 2 for 2 in his two overs, skipper Burke picking up the other wicket to fall, dismissing Aatish Venkatesan with a yorker. The “Torrance House” would need 76 to win.
In what would turn in to a thriller in the gathering gloom, the Under 14s made early in-roads that saw then reduce their visitors to 32 for 5. Akshat Shrivastava, Rana, Arif (two), and Asif were the wicket-takers, and the game was very much in the balance. Could the visitors’ tail wag? Could the Under 14s continue to bowl and field tightly? East Kilbride’s Chaudhry had retired, and would return when Burke was bowled first ball by Arif to give him a third wicket. And so, batting with last batter Doran, it would be down to Chaudhry to see if he could steer his side to the win. 68 for 7 was the score as the game – and season 2022 – went in to its last two overs. Arif would bowl the penultimate over, Shrivastava would take the ball for over sixteen. Arif then restricted East Kilbride to just 2 runs in his over, meaning over sixteen started with the visitors needing 6 to win, and the Under 14s needing one wicket, or managing to allow 5 or fewer runs, to see a different result. The first two balls were dots, then a single,…..a single that came after a tough caught-and-bowled chance just couldn’t quite be held on to. But the boundary 4 had been prevented, and that was just as important. 5 needed now from three. Another dot, a single, and a dot. East Kilbride 72 for 7, and the Under 14s sneaked home by just 3 runs. A good game to end with, and a result that could’ve gone either way right to the final ball.
Shrivastava finished with figures of 4-0-11-2, and Arif 4-1-9-3 – well bowled both. [Scorecard]
The Academy hosted Mearns this evening in a rearranged Evening League fixture. Reduced to either overs-a-side given fading evening light, the visitors batted first. After racking up 243 for 9 in their 40 overs against the Panthers two days previously, Mearns must’ve hoped to be similarly destructive against the Academy. However it wouldn’t be the case as the Academy youngsters bowled tightly, and – as importantly – took wickets at regular intervals. The first wicket fell with the visitors’ total on 23, and this triggered regular further dismissals. Only opener Kapila (44) would make a major contribution, eventually finding a bit of support from number eight Ganesan (16*). However, by then, seven other batters had come-and-gone without any reaching 5, the Academy bowlers finding the sort of success that had evaded the Panthers. The final wicket would fall in the eighteenth over, Hamaad Anwar taking his fourth wicket to see Mearns bowled out for 110. Anwar had returned figures of 3.4-0-22-4, and Bilal Hassan (2 for 21) and Elliot Moffat (2 for 21) had taken a couple of wickets each. 111 to win then.
Hunnain Sohail (23) and Adam Mohammed (13) put on 21 for the first wicket before separated, but, after Mohammed departed the side struggled to form batting partnerships. And as wickets fell regularly in the first innings, so the same happened in the Academy’s reply. Four batters recorded ducks. and after Sohail departed the Mearns’ bowlers pretty much ran through the rest of the line-up. Unusually nine of ten wickets to fall saw the batter clean bowled, the other wicket seeing Robert Cathcart trapped LBW. There’s definitely something in that about batters playing straight,…..or not! 62 all out was the final score, seeing Mearns run out 49-run winners. So a disappointing second innings, after such a good first half. But still positives in that first innings. [Scorecard]
Today’s Sunday League match at Bellahouston Park between the Panthers and Mearns resulted in a big win for the home side. Batting first, Mearns racked up 243 for 9 in their 40 overs, with Haidar (85) and Kumar (42*) both making important contributions. There were also cameos from Akhtar (28) and Gupta (22), as the Panthers attack struggled to contain their hosts’ batting line-up. Waseem Ahmed’s figures of 5-0-23-3 did stand out amidst the carnage around him, Osman Khalid also taking a brace of wickets. And skipper Osama Baig – although going wicketless – must wonder what else he had to do, opening the bowling and bowling his six overs for just 17 runs.
Chasing 244 to win in just 40 overs was never going to be easy, but – likely – the Panthers didn’t expect to be skittled out for just 56. Only Haroon Khan (26) made it in to double figures, with three batters registering entries on the Webbed Feet Award table. 56 all out, and less than 22 overs faced, Mearns running out winners by almost 200 runs. All-in-all, a match to be quickly forgotten. [Scorecard]
The ‘Loc ran out 69-run winners in today’s final Saturday League match of the season. Batting first at “Marress”, the side posted a healthy 234 for 9, with meaningful contributions from Sufian (69), Balawal Fahim (49), and Murtaza Syed (37*). But it didn’t always look like being the case that a decent score would be posted, particularly after three quick wickets left the side reeling on 30 for 3. Osama Baig (6), Mohammad Chaudhry (15), and Hunnain Sohail (2), were the batters who were all back in the shed, with Ali and Fahim the two batters together in the middle. These two carefully rebuilt, and took their partnership, first, to 50, then past three figures, before eventually being separated with the scoreboard showing 157. They’d put on 127 together, and – as a result – set up the possibility of getting to 200. And after both Ali and Fahim were dismissed, the mantle was picked up by skipper Murtaza Syed, who, in making 37, chaperoned the lower order to see his side not just to 200, but up to 234. Nine wickets would fall, all-in, with Robert Cathcart (7*) and Ahmed-Raza Hanif (4*) the two not out batters. 235 for the home side to win then.
Without one of their South African players – Avontour – the home side were, arguably, a batter lite, however in “Overseas Amateur” Lubbe they have a batter who can almost win any game on his own. And so it very nearly turned out, Irvine would be bowled out for 165 eventually, a total that saw just two home batters, aside Lubbe, get in to double figures, six batters fail to score, and two others not get past 3. Lubbe, though, made up for the carnage around him, smoking 121 from just 103 deliveries, a knock that included a plethora of boundaries, and added to his already legendary status as a very, very, big hitter of a cricket ball. But in the end – Lubbe was last out – it proved even beyond the big South African, Irvine finishing 70 runs short of their target, and the ‘Loc therefore winning by 69 runs. Cambusdoon visited “Shawholm” today, in the final Premier Reserve Division Saturday League match of season 2022. And after the toss, it was the Ayrshire team that were batting first, Woodhouse and McCrossin the openers. This combination of youth and experience set the base for what would be a hefty innings total, 72 being put on in double-quick time by the pair. McCrossin was first to be dismissed, trapped LBW by Hasan Rafiq, bringing Borland to the middle to join Woodhouse. Borland (17) and Mitchell, like McCrossin experienced campaigners, would both get starts, but be unable to really press on. Woodhouse, however, was still accumulating nicely. 72 for 0 had become 145 for 3 when Mitchell was the third batter out, Logan, batting at five, the next Cambusdoon batter to partner Woodhouse. The latter had by then reached his half century, and would bring up his 100 en route to an impressive 119. Comfortably the highest score of the innings, and – in fact – the match. Throwing in 40 runs in extras, and Woodhouse’s efforts had seen his side to 249 for 5 in their 50 overs. A mere 250 to win then!
The Shawholm reply started poorly as well; Ehsan Rafiq and Zen Kamran going for just 3, and 4, respectively. Aasim Khurshid, batting at three, got in to double figures, but would be dismissed after adding just 1 more run, and Awace Ahmed – in at four – made 3 more, before being bowled by Forsyth for 14. By this stage not only was 250 looking out of reach, but even the first losing bonus points were beginning to look unlikely. Irfan Hanif (31*) did stop the rot, and would be unbeaten come the final wicket falling, however he couldn’t find a partner to stay with him, Rameez Hassan (0), Saad Salim (4), Tariq Din (1), and Hamaad Anwar (3) all coming and going cheaply. With Humza Baig not batting, Shawholm reply closed on 92 for 9, leaving Cambusdoon 157-run winners. [Scorecard]
Tonight saw another bumper turnout at the club’s under 13 coaching and practice. After a wet week, it was great to see so many youngsters. The outdoor season is nearing its close, with the end of August looming, and after a break in September we’ll be moving back indoors for another winter’s indoor cricket. Full details to come. Teams play in the league and cup competitions of the Western District Cricket Union (“WDCU”), and cup competitions of the national governing body, Cricket Scotland.
Poloc Panthers play in the WDCU Sunday and Evening Leagues, the Poloc Pythons compete in Cricket Scotland’s winter tapeball league, and junior sides play at different age-group levels in the West District Junior Cricket Union soft- and hard-ball leagues and cups, as well as in national cup competitions.
