GHK were the visitors this evening in the final McCulloch Cup group stage match, the ‘Loc looking for their fourth win over the Glasgow West End side this season. After the toss, the ‘Loc were batting, Mohammad Chaudhry and Calum James opening. James continued his form of 24 hours earlier – when he’d scored an unbeaten 90* in the Evening League – making 31. And Chaudhry (51) would also score heavily, reaching his half century before being dismissed. Also in the runs, and continuing his good form of last weekend, was Balawal Fahim, whose 33, batting at four, was integral to the 150+ total eventually being posted. 152 for 8 in fact, 15 runs coming in extras, and meaning the “Old Anniesland” side needed to score at more than 7.5 runs-an-over to record the win.
But this never looked likely as the visitors lost early wickets. Three of the top five batters failed to trouble the scorers, with Robert Cathcart – opening the bowling with Waseem Ahmed – returning figures of 4-1-6-2. Saad Salim also notched a brace of wickets, though in somewhat more bizarre circumstances: his single over costing 11 runs, as well as seeing him pick up the wickets of Dar and Mirza. In total, seven bowlers would roll their arms over, with Ahmed-Raza Hanif’s spell again being worthy of mention in dispatches: 4-1-4-2. 86 all out in the final over saw the ‘Loc record a 66-run win, and saw the side finish on 7 points in the group, the same number as both Clydesdale and Langside. However the ‘Loc‘s poorer NRR will see the other two southside clubs progress from the group, and being a good reminder that losing well is always better than losing badly, whether in Saturday League matches or round-robin cup competitions!
