Winter Golf Section – Scramble [posted 14/11/20]

The Winter Golf Section’s new season got underway this afternoon, with the Scramble taking place.  In what were challenging and dreich weather conditions it was the team skippered by Stuart Irons that triumphed, their net 58 seeing them into a sudden-death play-off, which they won to see them take home the prizes!  Well done to Stuart and his side, and thanks to Adam Richardson for presenting “Wee Poloc” in remarkable condition given the recent weather.

Wilma Duncanson [posted 10/11/20]

The club was saddened to hear that Wilma Duncanson, wife of former President, and Honorary Member, Jimmy Duncanson, passed away yesterday after a short illness.  The thoughts of the whole Poloc community are with Jimmy, Sandy, Susan and all the family at this sad time.

Glenton Stuurman earns international call-up [posted 06/11/20]

The club’s 2012 “Overseas amateur” Glenton Stuurman has been included in the South Africa one-day squad for the upcoming tour by England.  Glenton’s selection is just the latest step in his progress, and follows from impressive performances in South Africa’s domestic franchise cricket.  Congratulations to Glenton!  Read more about Glenton’s inclusion online on ESPN CricInfo.

Refurbishment continues [posted 26/10/20]

Groundsman Adam Richardson has turned his attention indoors this week, with the refurbishment of the groundsman’s store and office underway.  More good work from Adam as the club tries to continue to make good use of this period of partial “lockdown”.

Groundsman Adam Richardson continues to work hard on the ground, this week’s relatively mild weather allowing solid-tining of the square (see left). The club’s thanks are also due to Glasgow Council’s staff, and Pollok Estate Manager Paul Brannan, for their assistance with the work.

Refurbishment of flag pole [posted 16/09/20]

The club’s investment in improving the facilities and environ’s at “Shawholm” have been a feature of “lockdown”, and it continued last week with the complete refurbishment of the flag pole, and base (pictured below).  Thanks to Adam Richardson and his assistant for their great work on this project.

Academy lose out to Clydesdale [posted 04/09/20]

A sixteen overs-a-side match was possible this evening, the Academy side taking on a Development XI from near-neighbours Clydesdale starting at 5.30pm.  On a bright but ultimately chilly night, after a dat of sunshine and showers, the visitors batted first and posted 123 for 3.  Samee was the pick of the ‘Loc‘s bowlers with a brace to his name, whilst Esakhiel top-scored for Clydesdale – his innings being interrupted by a nose-bleed that saw him retire and then return.  In their reply the Academy would eventually finish 100 for 6, and 24 runs shy of their target.  The three-figure total owed much to Hasan’s 23-ball 34 that included four maximums, with Rob’ (19) and Elliot (13*) chipping in with cameos.  [Scorecard]

Second best in Paisley [posted 01/09/20]

A Poloc XI took on a Ferguslie XI at “Meikleriggs” this evening in a friendly T20-turned-sixteen-overs-a-side match.  In the field first, the ‘Loc attack was spearheaded by a combo of Cathcarts, Rob’ and Jamesy sharing the new ball.  Two meaningful contributions – from Preston-Jones (34) and Henry (34) saw the home side post 106 for 8, with Raza returning the best bowling figures with 3 for 20 in his four overs.  The other wickets were shared around, with one-apiece for Rob’, Hasan, Kess and Elliot, Irfan chipping in with a run out to get rid of Preston-Jones.  In reply, in the gathering gloom, the ‘Loc never really got going, being dismissed for just 36, with none of the batters, like seven of the home side’s batters, getting to double figures. [Scorecard]

This week’s activities [posted 31/08/20]

As we turn in to September, there’s still plenty going on at the club this week.  There are COVID-19-safe training sessions for senior players on Tuesday and Thursday evening as usual, with a Poloc XI also travelling to “Meikleriggs” on Tuesday evening to take on Ferguslie in a local T20 friendly.  Here’s hoping, after two washed-out previously scheduled matches against the Paisley club that the weather is kind tomorrow.  Thursday evening also sees the club’s youngest age-group training at the club, Keith Sheridan leading the session between 6pm and 7pm.  Friday night then finishes off the weekday activities with a scheduled home Development XI match against near-neighbours Clydesdale.

Women’s inter-regional matches [posted 30/08/20]

We were pleased to host West Women Under 18s’ two home inter-regional T20 matches against East Women Under 18s at “Shawholm” today, the back-to-back matches being played under COVID-19-safe protocols agreed between Cricket Scotland and the Scottish Government and sportscotland.  The East Women’s side won both matches, but – in front of a healthy [Ed: no pun intended!] group of parents – the double-header saw competitive cricket of a high standard.  Thanks to the groundstaff led by Adam Richardson for his hard work in getting the ground ready to host today’s matches after a week of horrendous weather.

Storm Francis might’ve come and gone, but a wet Wednesday and more torrential rain today has seen tonight’s T20 against Clydesdale called off.  #Scottishsummer

As expected, Storm Francis put paid to this evening’s home T20 friendly against Ferguslie, with the match being called off shortly before lunch such was the rain.  Another evening T20 against the Paisley side has been scheduled for next Tuesday, at “Meikleriggs”.

Cricket Scotland update for clubs [posted 24/08/20]

Cricket Scotland has again updated clubs on COVID-19-safe protocols.  In its circular to clubs this evening, which can be found online, here, the national governing body’s Head of Development Nic Wilson noted, “The key changes to the latest guidance are:

• Outdoor training and competition for all ages, can now take place with a maximum of 30 people taking part in any one session or match.
• No physical distancing is required during training/match activity, however normal household guidelines on physical distancing must be adhered to before and after activity for 12 yrs and over.
• This means the restrictions for net practice, operating every second net, no longer apply.”

The week ahead [posted 23/08/20]

It’s busy week ahead for the club with, weather-permitting, three home matches.  Tuesday and Thursday evening could see, respectively, Ferguslie and Clydesdale visit for T20s against Poloc XIs, whilst Friday sees a home Development XI fixture against Clydesdale scheduled.  The two Poloc XI matches start at 6pm, the Development XI match at 5.30pm.  This week also sees near-neighbours Pollok FC start their pre-season training at “Shawholm” with sessions scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturday morning.  All of this of course in parallel with the BodyFit fitness sessions continuing as usual.

Eventually! [posted 20/08/20]

The club finally played a cricket match this evening!  In late August!  The match was a local T20 [Ed: that became a T12 after two rain interruptions!] against Clydesdale, at “Titwood”.  Batting first, the Crossmyloof side posted 87 for 2, a target that, in the gathering gloom, the ‘Loc side couldn’t chase down.  Good to get a match in notwithstanding the date and weather!  Thanks to Clydesdale for hosting, and umpire Gregg Watson for standing. [Scorecard]

Just our luck! [posted 18/08/20]

After waiting months to play their first match, tonight’s season-opener [Ed: yes, in August!] was – maybe not unexpectedly – rained off!  Scheduled for a 6pm start at “Meikleriggs”, tonight’s T20 friendly versus Ferguslie was called off, with the raining falling heavily, around 4pm.  Here’s hoping for fairer weather on Thursday.

Sightscreens refurbishment [posted 16/08/20]

Work around the ground continued over the weekend with the repaintaining of all four sightscreens – black one side and white the other, of course (see below).  The screens had some repair work done last week, with replacement – heavier – bottom beams being put on in the hope this will mean they won’t be so susceptible to breaking when the “local youth” use then as benches or for jumping on!  Thanks to Iain Todd and Jamie Patterson for their joinery and decoration services, respectively.

Cricket Scotland update for clubs on inter-club matches [posted 15/08/20]

Cricket Scotland has again updated clubs on COVID-19-safe inter-club matches protocols.  In its circular to clubs today the national governing body said, “Further to Cricket Scotland’s guidance for inter-club fixtures effective from 10 August 2020, the Wicket Keeper may stand up to the stumps to slow bowlers on occasions during a match.

“Whilst social distancing measures should apply at all times it is acknowledged that there are times when this is not possible and common sense must apply.  Umpires and players must adhere to the following:

1. Batter to face away from the wicket keeper at all times.
2. Batter and wicket keeper must not engage in conversation.
3. Wicket keeper to be active in gathering the ball from fielders.
4. Wicket keeper should step away from the stumps while the bowler is returning to their mark.
5. Wicket keeper permitted to wear a face mask if they so wish.
6. Umpires to monitor wicket keepers standing up to ensure the above guidance is being adhered to.”

Jim Sim [posted 10/08/20]

The club was saddened to learn, today, of the passing of Jim Sim.  The thoughts of those at the club, particularly those who remember Jim, are with his wife Sheena, and sons Ian and Gordon.  Jim was a General Committee member, President Kenneth Robertson remembering him serving as House Convenor, and, as an architect, helping to remodel the internal layout of the clubhouse including the open plan main lounge and back room areas, and the current toilet and shower areas.  Still subject to COVID-19-related restrictions, a private service will take place at Linn Crematorium.

COVID-19-safe training sessions continue, matches imminent [posted 08/08/20]

The news that local inter-club matches are to be allowed from 10 August 2020 (see below) is encouraging, and it is hoped that the club can organise these over the coming week.  Meantime, the COVID-19-safe training sessions continue.  Today’s participants were welcomed by glorious weather in G43, the ground looking resplendent in the early morning sunshine (picture below courtesy of BodyFit trainer Stuart Irons).  As matches are arranged they will be added to the website’s Upcoming events section.  And with real cricket imminent it’s also apt that players are reminded that to be eligible to play they must be up-to-date with their membership subscriptions.

Cricket Scotland update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 07/08/20]

Cricket Scotland has again updated clubs on the return to cricket activities.  In its press release today the national governing body said, “Cricket Scotland is delighted to announce the resumption of local inter-club fixtures (both adult and junior), subject to certain restrictions, with effect from Monday 10th August 2020.

“Cricket Scotland is grateful to the Scottish Government and sportscotland for their help in, and approval of, this very positive step.  Detailed guidance appears on the Cricket Scotland website which must be followed. The key issues for clubs to consider, over and above those applying to the current intra club games, in playing local inter-club fixtures include:

:: recording of all participants’ contact details
:: travel to and from the ground: and
:: minimising any group gatherings before, during and after the match.

“The full guidance for clubs can be found online.  Additionally, club players and officials are encouraged to read this short online e-learning course which provides general information on staying safe and specific information on inter-club fixtures. The course can be found online.  The expectation is that the matches will be played within localised clusters of clubs – some matches of that nature have already been provisionally arranged by the Regional Associations or by clubs themselves.  The opportunity exists, under the guidance, for clubs which are some distance from others to play matches but subject to the specific travel requirements laid down.  The Regional Associations are able to advise clubs on the extent of localised clusters.  Clubs are reminded that the Club and members must be aware of and able to adapt to changes in guidance at short notice, for example, in the event of a local lockdown.  Clearly this resumption is hugely welcome but it must take place with suitable caution in the continuing pandemic, particularly in the light of fresh outbreaks in certain parts of the country.  Special guidance is being considered by the relevant Regional Associations and Cricket Scotland for clubs in Aberdeen itself and will be communicated in the next few days.”

Cricket Scotland update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 17/07/20]

Cricket Scotland has updated clubs on the return to cricket activities.  In its press release this morning the national governing body said, “We are pleased to announce, that sportscotland have given approval for 11-aside cricket training games to be played by children, young people and adults from Saturday 18 July, in accordance with specific guidance that can be found online.

“These matches must be played in an intra-club setting only, involving only members of that one club.  We thank sportscotland for their support and hope that clubs will enjoy some ‘proper’ cricket activity within the club setting, as soon as they feel ready to do so, in compliance with the guidelines supplied.”

Western District Cricket Union further update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 16/07/20]

The Western District Cricket Union (“WDCU”) has issued the following update to clubs today.  “Although we have now seen a return to cricket training, albeit with some significant restrictions, we thought it helpful, after the latest meeting of regional associations and Cricket Scotland on Wednesday, to remind clubs and players that no date has yet been confirmed for any return to senior match cricket, which is part of Phase 4 of the ‘route map’.

“You may have seen the Cricket Scotland statement this morning, and we would reiterate that the timescales and restrictions relating to this are essentially driven by the Scottish Government, not Cricket Scotland or the WDCU, and the next review date for this is on 30th July.  Previous relaxations have typically seen a delay of seven to ten days between announcement and implementation.  It is also possible that any return to matches may initially be on an intra-club basis (i.e. within a single club).  This would clearly point to the 1st August being unlikely to be realistic if it is the case.  The WDCU would also reiterate that any resumption of matches between different clubs (inter-club matches) would be along the lines of local friendlies only as it appears that travel has been identified as a major risk area by the authorities.”

Cricket Scotland update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 16/07/20]

Cricket Scotland has updated clubs on the return to cricket activities.  In its press release this morning the national governing body said, “Following the recent Scottish Government announcement that suggested we will be moving to Phase 4 during August, Cricket Scotland is mindful that clubs will require some time to prepare for game based activity potentially with modified rules and conditions.

“We are currently working with sportscotland to agree a return to cricket fixtures and envisage this will be introduced first at an intra-club level (matches between members within the same club) followed by local friendlies.  Our intention is to agree a match format which complies with Scottish Government rules on staying safe, social distancing and the test and protect guidance.  We will issue this guidance as soon as it is authorised by sportscotland.  “The timescales and restrictions relating to this are essentially driven by the Scottish Government, not Cricket Scotland and their next review date for this is on 30th July.  Please be aware that previous relaxations have typically seen a staged approach, with a delay between announcement and implementation, therefore it is unlikely that inter-club fixtures (between different clubs) will be able to commence on 1st August.”

Western District Cricket Union further update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 14/07/20]

The Western District Cricket Union (“WDCU”) has issued the following update to clubs.  “The WDCU were pleased to take part in discussions last week with many member clubs about ensuring all clubs get as much as they can out of the truncated season once the guidance allows match play to start. We were especially buoyed by the collaborative and inclusive approach of the clubs and their understanding that all Government, Cricket Scotland and WDCU guidance must be adhered to and their appreciation that all clubs in the region will have different and varying needs and requirements.

“The clubs demonstrated a willingness to work within a framework of ‘local areas’ to organise their friendly fixtures and are free to organise fixtures as they so wish, within the aforementioned guidelines.  The WDCU would like to reiterate that, as friendly fixtures, clubs are encouraged to communicate with each other and organise the cricket that suits them best.  The WDCU is on hand to assist any club that needs help with either fixtures or ground availability issues.  All queries should, in the first instance, go to the Administrator, Iain Kennedy.  During the discussions, some clubs asked about the possibility of purchasing balls the WDCU has in stock.  There are currently stocks of both red and pink ‘Lords’ and ‘Oxbridge’ balls (some in limited number) which may be purchased.  Should your club need to purchase balls, please get in touch with the Administrator as soon as possible so we can organise collection of the balls in a way that reduces the amount of travelling as much as possible.  It may be that one club in an ‘area’ can pick up balls for several clubs, for example.  In order to reduce travelling, we would encourage clubs to utilise the stocks of balls they have ‘at hand’ before purchasing more and remind them that, due to all fixtures being friendly, there is no regulation on make of ball used.”

Ground preparations continue [posted 10/07/20]

The club’s groundstaff, led by groundsman Adam Richardson, continue to work towards the hoped-for resumption of cricket matches in August, and in parallel to the improvement works they have been undertaking during the lockdown period, work on preparing the ground for match play has been stepped up.

Today saw the first really “close cut” of the outfield with the usual temporary thin stripes (see above) making their annual appearance, albeit belatedly!  With favourable weather the next couple of weeks will see the traditional broad stripes return as the old lady looks to host some play in what would be her 141st season.

Cricket Scotland update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 10/07/20]

Cricket Scotland has circulated updated guidance for clubs on the return to cricket activities that are anticipated to be permissable as Scotland moves in to Phase 3 of the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions.  The summary can be found online here, and on Cricket Scotland’s website, and the website COVID-19 safe activities section has been updated.

Western District Cricket Union further update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 09/07/20]

The Western District Cricket Union (“WDCU”) has issued the following information to clubs on the return to cricket activities.  “Due to some direct queries received and some public conjecture, the WDCU would like to clarify some of the reasons why it has decided not to organise any competitions for season 2020 in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and, instead, encourage clubs who want to organise fixtures, to do so on the basis of local friendlies once arrangements for matches have been confirmed.

“The unprecedented situation has given rise to a number of difficulties in organising and playing cricket and the WDCU has been in regular contact with Cricket Scotland and other regional associations since March.  We have made decisions based on these discussions, and the subsequent communications from Cricket Scotland who have also been liaising with both sportscotland and the Scottish Government.  Their advice has been paramount in arriving at our decisions.  The decision not to organise any competitive fixtures this year for WDCU clubs is fully supported by Cricket Scotland and is broadly in line with decisions of all other regional associations.  The proposed start date of 1st August is still  to be confirmed by Cricket Scotland and they have also yet to confirm the protocols for match play, as well as any additional regulations which might apply.

“The WDCU wants their clubs and players to play as much cricket as they can, as safely as possible.  However, there is a large variance in the ability of our member clubs to participate safely and within the protocols referred to above. These may involve significant logistical arrangements, time and cost for our clubs.  There are likely to be a number of clubs and players who will not be able or willing, for many reasons, to adhere to all of these requirements and safely take part in matches. In addition, some clubs may have ground availability issues in both August and September.  The WDCU did not want to put any undue pressure on any club or player to play by organising competitions.  This position has been broadly adopted by the other regional associations and supported by Cricket Scotland.  The WDCU covers a geographically diverse area.  We do not want to impose undue travel on clubs/players in order to compete in a mandated competition. Due to current social distancing protocols, this would, almost certainly, require significantly more vehicles and trips than normal.  The WDCU also feels a responsibility to the wider public to reduce, as much as possible, any risk of potential spread of the virus through undue travel to take part in our competitions.

“Given all of the above, and the understandable desire from clubs for decisions to be made as early as possible to allow plans to be made, it was agreed by Cricket Scotland and all regional associations that the best approach would be for matches to be arranged by clubs themselves as friendlies and on a local basis.  It would allow those clubs and players who are keen to play to do so, within the regulations, and to arrange formats and teams that suit, while also allowing those that would rather not play, to avoid it.  As we gain clarity on the match play regulations and start date, the WDCU will be happy to facilitate clubs to play as much cricket as possible, including but not limited to; assisting clubs requiring fixtures to access other club contacts and assisting those with ground and facility issues to find suitable alternatives.  THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CLUBS TO OFFER COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT TO OTHERS MORE ADVERSELY AFFECTED THAN THEMSELVES.  We have followed the lead of our governing body and have the safety of all our clubs, players, officials and the wider public as the absolute priority.  The impact of the lack of cricket activity and match play on our clubs is acutely understood as all members of our committees have involvement at their own clubs and the hardship and distress felt by many is also felt by us.  Since lockdown restrictions have been imposed the WDCU has attempted to proactively assist clubs in what are unprecedented times, including by reimbursing annual subscriptions, making hardship support payments to all clubs, offering loan repayment deferrals, agreeing to cancel ball orders and refunding ball order payments, and raising awareness of other funding support that became available and that many clubs have successfully been in receipt of.

“Decisions like this are not easy to make, nor are they ever universally popular.  As always, the decisions made are, in the judgement of those involved in WDCU, in the best interests of all.

“The WDCU would propose the following as guidance as to what it considers ‘local’ to mean.  Area Groups (such as exist for WDJCU purposes) or the McCulloch Cup ‘areas’ would be a starting point.  However, there would be pragmatic leeway around these as some clubs may be closer to clubs in an adjoining area than some in their own area.  Travelling time as well as distance should be considered, as well as the needs of the more geographically distant clubs.  Clubs would not be restricted to playing within the WDCU area if it is easier for them not to – Stirling or Stenhousemuir may find it easier to play clubs in the west of the ESCA region, whilst the Dumfries and Galloway clubs could also do so in Cumbria.  As an indication of hypothetical examples, Kilmarnock travelling to East Kilbride, or Poloc to Uddingston would both reasonably be considered ‘local’ even though these are in different ‘area groups’.  Ayr to Stirling, or Greenock to Dumfries would not be considered as local.”

Junior cricket – update from the WDJCU [posted 08/07/20]

With some senior cricket activities being recommenced over the last ten days, the West District Junior Cricket Union (“WDJCU”) has updated clubs on junior cricket matters.  On its website today Chair Parvase Majeed notes, “It has been a tough period of inactivity for clubs and the kids.  The WDJCU has put together a temporary structure for clubs to follow if they are in a position to offer junior cricket.  We must stress that the proposal is optional for all and clubs should continue to follow the current government guidance.  As things stand an update is due from Cricket scotland on 13 July.  If conditions continue to improve then there may be the possibility of some form of cricket from 1 August.  Clubs are asked to plan if they wish to offer cricket to their juniors from 1 August.  Stay safe.”  The WDJCU also circulated a proposal document concerning the reinvigorating of Area Development Groups, and this can be read online here.

“COVID-19-safe” training continues [posted 07/07/20]

Intermittent rain and drizzle couldn’t put paid to the start of a second week of “COVID-19-safe” training sessions this evening, with players (pictured below) determined to make up for lost time in the nets.  Thanks again to those members volunteering as Session Monitors to ensure the safety of players attending, and compliance with the requisite national governing body and Scottish Government guidelines.

Return to cricket – update [posted 04/07/20]

The club’s return to cricket activities continued today with the start of pitch preparations in the hope that matches will be possible within the next month, it’s hoped from the start of August.  Groundsman Adam Richardson and his two assistants continue to work hard on the ground and surrounds, despite a week of typical #Scottishsummer weather.  The first week of “COVID-19-safe” training sessions passed without a hitch and sessions can be booked on an ongoing basis.  The BodyFit fitness group was also back in action at the club this week, and, like the cricketers, saw their return to activity successfully carried out. Western District Cricket Union further update for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 03/07/20]

The Western District Cricket Union (“WDCU”) has circulated summary guidance for clubs on the return to cricket activities. In a circular to member clubs the WDCU noted, “The target date for resumption of games remains 1st August 2020.  This has not been confirmed yet by Cricket Scotland and remains open to change.

“When the resumption of cricket matches is permitted the WDCU does not propose to deliver any competitions however are happy to facilitate matches by providing an up to date contacts lists for clubs to arrange games themselves.   WDCU believe that locally, possibly hub based, T20 matches are the best option due to continuing travel constraints and the lack of changing and catering facilities.

“Should they require them clubs will be responsible for arranging umpires and paying match fees and travel expenses. WDCU suggest that local umpires should be used where possible.  As any matches will not be run under formal WDCU auspices then there are no PlayerReg requirements.  Clubs should be aware that it is their responsibility to conduct a risk assessment and to ensure that all relevant COVID 19 guidelines are adhered to should they organise any matches.  Further guidance will be issued as and when any new information becomes available.”

Return to cricket – update [posted 25/06/20]

The club continues to plan for the recommencement of cricket activities as part of the relaxation of restrictions related to COVID-19.  The initial recommencement protocols will be trialled next week, with processes and sessions being assessed at the end of the week to ascertain how these were in practice, and to assist with a possible expansion of activities thereafter.  Josh Sajjad, the Head of Senior Cricket, will be managing the booking system that is being put in place to manage use of the designated training zones that will be in place by June the 29th.  The booking process will be intimated to members over the next few days, in advance of which the terms and conditions attaching to use of training facilities have been finalised, are online, and should be read by any member wanting to book.  A new section has also been added to the website that provides more information on the planned COVID-19 safe return to cricket activities, and should, similarly, be read by members.  More information will continue to be circulated to members, and parents of juniors, using the usual messaging channels over the next few days.

Cricket Scotland further guidance for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 23/06/20]

Following its earlier guidance to clubs, Cricket Scotland has contacted its members again this afternoon clarifying that, “…..we have been advised that toilet facilities must remain closed.”.  This means that, in addition to the other social distancing requirements to be implemented by the club it is important that members who, in time, have confirmed training slots are fully aware that clubhouse toilet facilities will be closed for the duration of their allotted session, and will not available for use.

Cricket Scotland guidance for clubs on the return to cricket [posted 23/06/20]

Cricket Scotland has circulated summary guidance for clubs on the return to cricket activities that are anticipated to be permissable as Scotland moves in to Phase 2 of the lifting of COVID-19-related restrictions, from 29 June 2020.  The summary can be found online here, and on Cricket Scotland’s website.

As noted below, the club is committed to the safe restarting of cricket activities at the earliest practical juncture, and in a manner that is fully compliant with national governing body and Government agency guidelines and rules.  The Cricket Scotland summary guidance makes reference to detailed guidance expected from sportscotland before the 29th of June, pending which the club will continue its planning.   Again as noted below, regular updates to players and members will continue to be issued using the usual messaging channels.

Re-commencement of cricket activities – club update [posted 21/06/20]

The club’s General Committee met earlier today, by video-call, to discuss the possible re-commencement of cricket activities at “Shawholm” in line with Scottish Government-approved national governing body guidelines expected to be published over the next week.  Discussion centred on ensuring that any activities that were re-started would be facilitated in a COVID-safe way.  Whilst the guidance from Cricket Scotland remains to be published, it was concluded likely that this would not be materially divergent from the guidance issued, and that has been operational, in England.  As such, once the re-commencement of some activities does become permitted, it is important for all members to note that this will not mean that everything will be “back to normal”.  Rather it is expected that activities will be very limited in the first instance; will be trialled over at least the first week of relaxed restrictions; will follow a risk assessment having been carried out pursuant to whatever guidelines are set out; will likely centre on [very] small-group net practice using the all-weather net bay and practice area; and will be controlled by a formal booking and monitoring system.  The committee also agreed that only members who have continued to pay their membership subscriptions will be eligible to book in for sessions.  In summary, the club is committed to re-commencing cricket activities at the earliest practical juncture, when it is safe to do so, and is also – cognisant of its responsibilities to members, their families and the wider community – committed to only doing so in a manner that is safe and fully compliant with specific published guidance and wider Government rules.  Regular updates to players and members will continue to be issued using the usual messaging channels.

Cricket Scotland today issued a futher update regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.  In its statement the national governing body said, “Cricket Scotland has today welcomed the First Minister’s announcement to move through the route map process which will allow the return of cricket activity as part of revised exercise and physical activity guidelines.   This move highlights the positive impact sport has on physical health, mental health and wellbeing and is welcomed by those involved in cricket at all levels in Scotland.  Gus Mackay, CEO of Cricket Scotland, said: ‘Today’s news allows us to move to the next stage of resuming cricket activity in line with the latest public health advice. Over the next few days, Cricket Scotland’s guidance and plans for a return to cricket will be developed in partnership with sportscotland and the Scottish Government.  With cricket activity currently suspended until the 1st July, we are bringing this forward to restart initial activity from 29th June in accordance with the Scottish Government announcement that clubs may open all outdoor sports areas and pitches.  Until the guidance and plans are approved, we remain in Phase One in the easing of lockdown restrictions and no cricket activity at clubs or other cricket venues can take place.  We are committed to working closely with Scottish Government, sportscotland and other Sports Governing Bodies to ensure the safe return of cricket and the health and safety of all those involved in the game remains our priority.  Once the guidelines are approved, Cricket Scotland will announce the next steps.'”

COVID-19 – further statement from Cricket Scotland [posted 28/05/20]

Cricket Scotland today issued a futher update regarding the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.  In its statement the national governing body said, “Following the Scottish Government announcement today that certain non-contact outdoor sports are allowed to return in the Phase 1 exit from lockdown, Cricket Scotland would like to clarify the situation regarding cricket activity and training.  The Scottish Government has advised Cricket Scotland today that cricket is not one of the sports authorised to restart activity in Phase 1, including personal training and one to one coaching.  Cricket Scotland has submitted plans to the Scottish Government for approval for the return to training at elite and club level in anticipation that cricket will form part of the Scottish Government’s Phase 2 plan to allow players and coaches to return to training. It is hoped that those plans will be approved shortly before Phase 2 commences.  Any approval and potential return to cricket activity announced by the Scottish Government around the 18th June would only take effect from 1st July.  The period between these two dates will allow players, coaches, clubs and facilities time to prepare to comply with the approved plans and guidelines which are likely to require risk assessments, special hygiene and sanitation arrangements, formal booking systems, insurance checks and an on-site presence from the facility operator to supervise training at all times.  Cricket Scotland therefore reminds clubs and others that cricket activity remains suspended and all cricket facilities should remain closed until 1st July at the earliest.”

Ground update [posted 08/05/20]

There might be no cricket at present, because of the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 outbreak, however groundsman Adam Richardson has not been sitting on his hands.  Instead he’s taken the opportunity afforded by the break – in addition to maintaining the square and outfield on a “care and maintenance” basis – to work on areas of the surrounds to the policies, working, of course, on his own and socially distancing where required from other park users.

“You will probably have seen the latest update from Cricket Scotland released yesterday (see below) regarding the impact of coronavirus.  Although this refers to activity being suspended until 1st June, it will in all likelihood be extended, as noted in that statement.  We are also aware of the ECB statement issued today suspending professional cricket until 1st July and recreational cricket until further notice.  Although the WDCU league fixtures had been finalised some time before the scheduled start of the season, it has been agreed that it would not be appropriate to upload these to the WDCU website at this time.  Once again, we would remind clubs of the advice previously issued by the WDCU and Cricket Scotland regarding sources of financial assistance or ground maintenance queries.  The Cricket Scotland website now has a summary page with this on it.  We are pleased to note that a number of WDCU clubs have already been provided with financial assistance.”

“Cricket Scotland staff have been working remotely since 18th March and on 30th March, cricket activity was suspended in Scotland until 1st June.  As a direct result of this suspension of activities, Cricket Scotland has taken the difficult decision to furlough a significant proportion of its staff across the organisation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  In accordance with Government advice, Cricket Scotland has been strictly adhering to suggested protocols and re-evaluating these on a daily basis in order to best support the fight against the spread of COVID-19.  The well-being of our whole community remains at the forefront of our thinking and decision making.  Cricket Scotland will operate with reduced staff throughout April and May, with regular reviews taking place throughout this period.  Clubs, members, supporters and the wider cricket community may contact the relevant member of the leadership team as follows:

2020 office bearers, General Committee and other committee elections [posted 05/03/20]

The election of club officials and its General Committee has taken place, with nominated candidates being unanimously appointed by the membership.  The election sees Kenneth Robertson assume the club’s Presidency, Keith Young become Secretary, David James remain in post as Treasurer, and the cricket sections – senior and junior – being headed up by Josh Sajjad and Keith Sheridan respectively.  Positions on the Cricket Committee, including the Club Captain and other team captains will be finalised after a meeting of senior cricketers later in March.  A full list of office bearers and committee members can be found on the “Contact us” page.

Indoor cricket- Tuesday night sessions added in [posted 24/02/20]

Tuesday sees the start of our second of two weekly indoor practice sessions at Hutchesons’ Grammar School.  Between 8.30pm and 10pm every Tuesday until mid-April, the session is open to all players aged Under 16 and older, and to existing members and prospective new players.  Josh Sajjad (07546-878350) is leading the session and anyone with any questions can get in touch with him.  For the avoidance of doubt our Sunday afternoon indoor cricket continues, running until the start of the outdoor season too.

Raoul Gilbert [posted 23/02/20]

The club learned today of the passing, aged 86, of former member and player Raoul Gilbert.  Raoul (2 February 1934 to 22 February 2020), who passed away on Saturday in Andratx, Mallorca, played at the club as a young player in the 1950s, before moving to [then named] Rhodesia where he lived until the southern African country gained internationally-recognised independence as Zimbabwe in 1980, when he returned to live on the southside of Glasgow.  The club is, and those members and friends who knew and remember Raoul will be, saddened by the news of Raoul’s passing, and the condolences of all are extended to his family.

McCulloch Cup draw [posted 20/02/20]

The WDCU has published the draw for the group stages of this season’s McCulloch Cup.  Played on six consecutive Wednesday evenings, the 2020 draw sees a change to the composition of the Glasgow Group, with West of Scotland moving out of the group in to the East Group, and Ferguslie coming in to the Glasgow Group.  The change was precipitated by East Kilbride choosing not to play in the competition in 2020, and Kilmarnock no longer being eligible, their replacements being East Renfrewshire and Helensburgh.

After a drawing of lots, Ferguslie were selected as the replacements for West of Scotland in the East Group, the “Hamilton Crescent” side having taken up East Kilbride’s position in that group.  #allchange

Pythons versus I Passing Smiles [posted 18/02/20] The Poloc Pythons now know their quarter-final opponents in this winter’s Cricket Scotland Tapeball League play-offs.  With a start time of 12.15pm this Sunday, the 23rd of February, the side will take on the curiously-named I Passing Smiles side who progressed from the other group.  Good luck to the Pythons on Sunday!

Adding to James Cathcart’s and Hasan Malik’s inclusion in the Western Warriors Under 16 training squad selected before Christmas, Poloc players have been included in the Warriors Development and Performance training squads, Ahmed-Raza Hanif, Amaan Ramzan and Kess Sajjad being selected for the former, and Ihtisham Malik and Craig Young for the latter.

As a new season looms, we also introduce a second indoor session each week from Tuesday the 25th of February.  The Tuesday evening sessions – running between 8.30pm and 10pm every week until the 7th of April – particularly provide a chance for any players who can’t manage along on Sunday afternoons to get some pre-season practice in.

Membership subscriptions – paying monthly REMINDER [posted 11/02/20]

With Saturday League fixtures released today, to add to the Evening League, cup and other fixtures already released, now is a good time to remind anyone who is not already paying by monthly standing order or other monthly transfer, that membership subscriptions must be paid monthly.  The membership rates are unchanged from 2019 and are a vital part of the club’s income.  Paying could not be easier, with the option of paying directly in to the club’s bank account (details below) or by PayPal into the club’s PayPal account.  Please make sure you aren’t the person who’s not up-to-date…..

Pythons versus Shah CC [posted 11/02/20] The Poloc Pythons are back in Tapeball League action tomorrow evening, taking on Shah CC at 8pm in the last of their group stage matches, and will be hoping to make it five wins on the spin.

2020 fixtures [posted 10/02/20]

With a new season “only” now three months away, or so, the fixtures for season 2020 are starting to be released.  The ‘Loc‘s Scottish Cup tie against Meigle was the first released, but since then the Rowan Cup, Western Cup and Greenwood Cup draws have all been made.  These are all online, and see – in order – the ‘Loc play Prestwick; Shawholm in a group with Hillhead, GHK, Victoria and Partick; and the Panthers host Glasgow Accies.  And in addition to cup draws being made, the league fixture card for the Panthers‘ 2020 Evening League campaign has been circulated to clubs, this seeing the Panthers take on Clydesdale, GHK, Glasgow Accies, Renfrew, Weirs and West of Scotland in Division 1.

Under 11s back in “Kwik Cricket” action [posted 09/02/20]

The club’s youngest playing age-group, the Under 11s, were back in Sunday morning indoor cricket action today, with scheduled matches against Uddingston and Ferguslie in the second round of matches of the 2020 six-a-side Under 11 “Kwik Cricket” tournament.   Played as usual at Uddingston Grammar School, the ‘Loc youngsters extended their winning run to four as they played and managed to win against Ferguslie…..twice! The double-header came about as a result of Uddingston’s youngsters not managing to play.  Game one saw a narrow 6-run win, game two seeing a winning margin of 16 runs.  Along witgh the usual great fun and general #bluebatbedlam there was some pretty good bowling and fielding on display, all boding well.  Next up for the Under 11s and 12s is next Sunday’s indoor practice between 2pm and 3pm at “Hutchie”.

The Pythons extended their winning streak in the Cricket Scotland Tapeball League to matches with a win over Greater Pollok Eagles, the Pythons romping to a seven-wicket victory.

Played at Uddingston Grammar School, the ‘Loc youngsters (pictured, left) managed two wins in their matches, beating Clydesdale first-up, by 12 runs (net 82 beating net 57), then recording a 25-win over their Ferguslie counterparts (net 89 seeing off net 51).  Great fun as usual, and thanks to coaches and organisers alike.

Kess Sajjad [posted 25/01/20]

Kess Sajjad (pictured in action, below) made his third appearance today for Scotland Under 19s in the ICC’s U19 CWC being played at present in South Africa.  After two defeats in their first two group stage matches – against Pakistan and Bangladesh – today saw the side again record a loss, losing by eight wickets after posting 140.  Despite the side’s heavy defeat Kess had a good day, his 68 seeing him top-score in the Scotland innings.  Well done to Kess on his performance, and he and the rest of the squad now look ahead to taking on UAE in the Plate Competition next week.

The Pythons recorded their first back-to-back wins in this winter’s Tapeball League defeating Glasgow Giants by 12 runs in a close encounter.

Scottish Cup draw [posted 17/01/20]

Cricket Scotland has released the draw for this season’s Scottish Cup.  The draw for round one saw the ‘Loc handed an away tie, Meigle the side’s hosts on Sunday the 24th of May.  The full draw can be seen online, on Cricket Scotland’s website.

Indoor cricket continues [posted 16/01/20]

This Sunday sees indoor practice at Hutchesons’ Grammar School continue, with two separate sessions.  Between 2pm and 3pm Keith Sheridan will lead a session for Under 12 players before, from 3pm to 4pm Keith Young is managing a session for older players.

Indoor Under 11 “Kwik Cricket” [posted 16/01/20]

As well as junior indoor practice and coaching and indoor cricket continuing at Hutchesons’ Grammar School Sports Hall, the club’s Under 11s start their participation in another indoor, six-a-side, “Kwik Cricket” programme later this month.  A full programme, mirroring the pre-Christmas one, between then and the end of March has been scheduled by Cricket Scotland and details of the club’s involvement can be found online.

This Sunday sees the continuation of indoor practice at Hutchesons’ Grammar School.  Coordinated by Josh Sajjad, this Sunday’s session is a two-hour session (2pm to 4pm) and is for players aged Under 16 and older.

Pythons go down to defeat [posted 10/01/20]

The Pythons continued their Tapeball League results sequence of win-one, lose-won, going down last night to Govanhill in the Cricket Scotland Tapeball League, their Glasgow southside rivals winning by 57 runs on matchday five.  Last night’s defeat means the Pythons have now played five, won two and lost three.

Special General Meeting [posted 08/01/20]

The agenda and papers for the Special General Meeting (“SGM”) of the club have been circulated, by email and message group, to members and parents today by Secretary Keith Sheridan.  The meeting is being held on Sunday, the 19th of January 2020, at 4.30pm, in the clubhouse.  Members and parents are encouraged to read the papers carefully and attend the SGM.

Club policies – annual review [posted 03/01/20]

The annual review of the club’s formal policies and operating procedures has been carried out, and the updated documentation can be found online in three of the website sections: 1. General documents; 2. Junior documents; and 3. Clubmark documents.  Members, including the parents or carers of junior members, and supporters are encouraged to review all these documents as they govern much of club life and its activities.  Particular attention is drawn to the various codes of conduct, including the Social media code of conduct.
