Under 19s finish runners-up on Super 8s Finals Day [posted 30/12/12]

Super_8s_logo_small

Ferguslie won this evening's Under 9 indoor Super 8s tournament, defeating the 'Loc 19s and the Dark Side.  Game one was the 19s against Ferguslie, the Paisley side batting first but being restricted to just 95 for 6 in their ten overs.  Given the crazy indoor scoring rules this was a decent effort.  Alistair Preston-Jones had top-scored with 31 not out for Ferguslie, getting some support from Stuart Darroch (18) and Hamza Tahir (12), the only other two batters into double figures.  9 wides were leaked, as well as a no ball, and these were generous gifts to the 19s' oppo'.  In reply the 19s ended 16 short of their target, Pasty retiring getting to 25 (22 balls) and Stiffy, with 16 (17 balls), top-scoring for them.  Hamza Tahir's two overs going for just 5 runs was crucial, as was Alec English's over costing just 6.

In the second game of Finals Day, the 'Loc took on the Dark Side, again fielding first.  Clydesdale posted a more-challenging 113 for 4 in the first innings, with both Ahmad Chaudhry and Haris Chaudhry (both 27 not out) retiring.  For the 19s there were three run outs executed, two for Pasty.  In reply the run-chase started well, with Pasty (26 not out, 13 balls) and Stiffy (25 not out, 18 balls) both retiring.  Saif then got to double figures, as did Stouty, leaving older brother Matt (23 not out) to see the side home with Ollie.  A win with an over to spare.  So all-in-all a decent tournament, Ferguslie likely being the best side on parade, though certainly not unbeatable.  A bit quicker in the run-chase against the Paisley side, and the result just might've been different.  The match scorecards are online.

Congratulations, too, to Pasty, for the small consolation of being named Under 19 Player of the Tournament for his four retirals (104 runs in four innings), overall bowling figures of 10-1-66-3 and four run outs.

Under 12 in Saturday Super 8s [posted 29/12/12]

Today was day three of the indor Super 8s and it was the Under 12s' turn to play their group matches.  Their oppo' came in the shapes of Ayr and Prestwick.  In game one the 12s batted first and posted 48 for 1 against Ayr.  Uzzair top-scored with an unbeaten 18 (39 balls), Palsingh was the dismissed batter, run out by Ryan Stirling for 7.  The plus was obviously that the side had batted carefully, but the downside was,.....they'd batted carefully!  48 would be difficult to defend, particularly with 2 runs for wides and no balls.  And so it turned out, Ayr knocking off the required runs in the seventh over for the loss of just two wickets.

Having lost the first match, the 12s were straight back on, this time facing Prestwick.  Again the Locsters won the toss and chose the bat first.  This time the guys batted more positively, whilst still remaining careful.  The result was a more competitive total of 57 for 2.  Uzzair retired, scoring 20 from 23 balls - a much better strike-rate - and he had support from Sohaib (12), with Palsingh and Abdul the not out batters.  In reply, the Prestwick side reached their target with ten balls to spare, Calam Turner top-scoring for them with 21 (retired).  So a better performance, but a second loss.  All-in-all though, the 12s - still a very young side - continue to show their promise.  Today's side comprised two Under 8s, two Under 9s, two Under 10s and just the two genuine Under 12s.  In Twitter-speak: #promise!  The match scorecards are online.

Under 15s crash out of the Super 8s [posted 28/12/12]

After the sublime that was Thursday's Under 19 indoor Super 8s group stage match wins, tonight's Under 15 games brought everyone back to earth with a bump.  A big bump!  After a fairly regulation win over East Kilbride in the first game that saw the side chase 71 to win, and doing so for the loss of just one wicket, match two saw a collective failure in almost every facet of the game!  Bizarre.  Renfrew were there opponents, and were fielding two youngsters who'd been drafted in after their first game against East Kilbride to make up an eight and were playing their first game of organised cricket, and they coasted to a five-wicket win with more than an over to spare.  Ouch!

In game one Owais had retired after getting to 26 and there was an 18 for CJ and 14 for Beast.  However the ease of this game's successful run chase owed as much to East Kilbride only having six players as it did any real fluency in the batting, and the first innings had seen the early signs of the other problem that would cost the 15s dear in the loss to Renfrew.  Akhil had opened the bowling and proceeded to bowl a fifteen-ball over that went for 9!  And the other bowlers weren't much better, no fewer than 20 runs being gifted in wides, and 3 in no balls.  And all this in just ten overs.  Abtaha's maiden and Lewis's 2 for 11 in three overs aside, game one's bowling can be forgotten.  And game two saw those particular hens come to roost with a bang!  Four run outs batting first, no batters retiring, and notwithstanding their opponents having two bowlers who couldn't bowl a regulation delivery between them, were the features of an innings that could muster just 88.  Then in looking to defend 88 Akhil's bowling yips reappeared as his first over went for 14, including 6 wides and 1 no ball.  Ouch!!  The Shah boys leaking just 12 runs in their two overs against their former teammates wasn't enough to turn the game back in the 15s' favour either as Renfrew romped home, the winning runs - perhaps pertinently - coming from 2 wides bowled by Aliyan.  So pretty disappointing, but a correct reflection of the performances - individual and collective - put on.  Much more thought needs to go in to matchplay - a problem seen all too often in the summer - and the execution of the basics has to be better if more defeats aren't to be plucked from apparently show-in victories!  The match scorecards are online - Certificate 18, you've been warned!

Under 19s win through in Super 8s [posted 27/12/12]

The Under 19s were the first 'Loc side in action in this year's indoor Super 8s tournaments.  They were in Group B along with Glasgow Accies and Clydesdale.  Accies lost the first group match, losing to Clydesdale, which meant they played the 19s first.  Batting first the west end club were restricted to 54 for 7 in their ten overs, Cammy Armour being the most economical of the bowlers, leaking just 6 runs in his two overs.  Rosco with a maiden [Ed: honestly!], Matthew Stout (1-0-2-0) and Owais Shah (1-0-4-1) also bowled well.  There were also four well executed run outs in the Accies' innings, four different fielders doing the needful.  In the run chase, Pasty retired scoring 25 off twelve deliveries, leaving Stiffy and Rosco to see their side home with over three overs to spare.

The second group match for the 19s was a southside derby against the Dark Side.  Again batting second, the 19s skittled out the boys from Toytown for just 80.  Stiffy's 2 for 4 was important in restricting the oppo', as were another four run outs.  81 to win was then chased down with four balls to spare, only one wicket falling along the way.  Pasty again retired with 28 off eighteen balls, Rosco (11 from nine) and Owais (8 from eleven) being the not out batters at the end.  Mention of Haris Chaudhry's bowling for the Dark Side should be made though too: 3-1-8-0 is pretty impressive in indoor crash-bang-wallop cric'!  The match scorecards are online too.

Christmas news from the Hon' Sec' [posted 20/12/12]

Golf_ball_pic

The rescheduled Vice-Captain's Prizes will take place on the 12th of January, and an eager group of golfers is expected to thunder a path down to Shawholm to shake off the perpetual ennui of early January.....this is the first leg of the Somerville Shield, and the heady aroma of simmering tense expectancy is already brewing by the riverside before this ever-prestigious two-legged affair shudders to a climax with the Captain's Prizes on 23 February.  If even more excitement is needed, remember that Quaich ties are all to be played while the two stern faces of Janus gaze down on the policies.  And.....smelling salts having been duly administered, this wintry bacchanalia of stick and ball will be duly crowned by the Captain's versus Vice-Captain's team showdown of 9 February.  We await the team selections of Messrs. Duncanson and Allan with breathless anticipation.

Club Insider writes, "The weather was the best it's been all summer,.....just in time for the season opening golf match!?!  The policies well set up, but tees and greens might need the blades lowered a smidge before East Ren' come a-calling. Sadly there was only a small field for the Mini-masters. The first gong of the new winter golf season was won with a net 61 by The Spen with a fresh set of swing-thoughts for a new season!  Said swing was like liquid chocolate until 18, when a mini-yippette occurred, but shrewd course management salvaged a five.  Top course management - are you listening Mr Hon' Sec'?  Second place was taken by Peter A' from Bean, courtesy of a better inward half, the pair carding net 64s. Fourth place might've been secured by DJ except that he inexplicably blasted his second and fourth shots at the 15th into the Cart.  Oopsy!  At least he rocked up though!  Finger out everyone - let's get down and play some golf!!"

Season 2012 signed off with a fun friendly between a Poloc XI and Geordie touring side the Old Record Players CC.  In a 30:30 match it was the tourists who came out on top, chasing 130 to win.  The winning margin was two wickets, the finish line being passed in the penultimate over.  For the 'Loc XI Charlie McBride top-scored with 44, with skipper-on-the-day Brian Spence chipping in with a quick-fire 40 that included a couple of 6s.  In the visitors' innings, quick wickets reduced the Geordies to 19 for 3, and then 46 for 6, before 73 were added by skipper Planchant and 'keeper Souter.

Planchant would bat through for an unbeaten 49.  Good fun on a cracking day weather-wise, and thanks to Mr and Mrs James for a splendiferous tea!! Scorecard online here, as well as Poloc XI stat's

This weekend sees the last outdoor action of season 2012,.....weather permitting!  On Saturday the club's hosting the first of two matches being played by the Old Record Players CC ("ORPCC") on their end-of-season Scottish tour.  Saturday's game is between a Clydesdale XI and ORPCC, whilst Sunday sees what could be described as an Old Poloc XI take on the English tourists.  To say that David James has pulled together a team of "veterans" would be being generous - should be fun!  Both games start at 12.30pm.

Coaching and other courses [posted 19/09/12]

Coach_education_logo

As part of our continuing commitment to improving the club's development work we're always looking to get existing coaches further qualified, and new people started on the coaching ladder.

In this regard there are three course coming up of interest.  For coaches who already have the UKCC1 (Level 1) qualification there's a UKCC2 course being run in Glasgow this year.  The course is being held at All Saints Secondary School on Monday evenings (6pm to 9pm) between the 22nd of October and 10th of December (inclusive).

There is also an ICC Introductory course being run at Hutchesons' Grammar School on the 7th of October, running between 10am and 4pm.  This course is absolutely ideal for people looking to learn the basics of coaching.  And, finally, there's a First Aid course being held on 21 October at Titwood, with a choice of timings.  Either 10am to 1pm, or 2pm to 5pm.  Booking forms for the intro' course and first aid course are online.

Anyone wanting to get on to these courses should get in touch with Keith Young (07802-951913) as soon as possible.

Match off [posted 14/09/12]

Tomorrow's game against Edinburgh South has been called off.  The ESCA club contacted Match Secretary Keith Sheridan around 11pm (!) this evening to say they couldn't raise a side.  To say this is disappointing might be this week's biggest understatement.  If you believe the Edinburgh South website they've got four XIs, and tomorrow's game's been scheduled for months, and yet we suffer an eleventh-hour call-off.  Apologies to the selected players, and the groundstaff who've put in great effort this week to prepare a wicket.

18s finish off with a win [posted 08/09/12]

WDJCU_logo

Typical!  The season's near done and a beautifully warm September afternoon greeted the Under 18s and their opponents from Forth Valley today at Shawholm as the old ground played host to a rescheduled league match.  The last 18s game of every season, sees the final hurrah for a few of the club's juniors.  Today it was the turns of Saqib, Pasty, Josh and Nick to play their last juniors games. All played their parts: all bowled, there were runs for Josh, and Craig signed off with an unbeaten 100 as the 18s posted 161 for 3 batting first.

In reply the visitors got to 109 for 7 to see the 18s secure the win.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

There was junior cricket on at the ground tonight with the 11s entertaining near-neighbours Clydesdale.  In a one-side game the little 'uns from Toytown ran out easy winners by a whopping 212 runs.  Almost unbelievably twenty overs were bowled by both sides, but in the first innings the 'Locster 11s somehow contrived to lose no fewer than seventeen [Ed: yes, 17!] wickets.  Then with the Dark Side's juniors just needing not to get out too often they managed to bunt scores and scores of runs, losing only wicket in the process!  OuchayMatch report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

It's also worth mentioning that G was particularly taken with the crisp holder that came with the kilt, finding it a really handy container for him to graze on his favourite Walkers flavours from.....

The Under 15s played what is likely their last league match of season 2012 tonight.  On a perfectly lovely night [Ed: remember them!] the 15s just came up short chasing 91 in eighteen overs to beat league leaders and champions-in-wauting, Ayr.  Batting first the visitors had been reduced to 4 for 3 at one point, and then 14 for 4 before recovering to 90 for 6.  In reply the 'Locsters finished 4 short to slip agonisingly to a narrow defeat.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

The Under 18s were in action this evening over at Hamilton Crescent in a rearranged league match.  Played in dismal conditions that saw steady rain pretty much throughout the second innings, the match at least saw the 18s record a win.  After restricting the home side to 76 for 5 batting first, the guys then chased down the 77 needed for the win with three overs in hand, and three wickets down.  Stouty (11*) and Stiffy (22*) were the batters in the middle when the winning post was past.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

League tables [posted 01/09/12]

We've updated league tables online - with the 'Loc's game at Torrance House off and Stenhousemuir beating Weirs at The Tryst, Stennie moved up a place into fifth.  Elsewhere Prestwick's win over Ferguslie saw Renfrew promoted and Kelburne slip into the play-off place.  Coming down into the First Division will be Greenock after their defeat at Toytown, meaning season 2013 will see away days at Glenpark and not KGV.  Updated Reserve League tables have yet to appear on the WDCU website.

New Anniesland was the venue for a rescheduled Under 18 match this evening as Glasgow Accies hosted the 18s.  The decision was eighteen overs-a-side with "the nights drawing in".  And when Accies were dismissed with just a ball left of the 36th over this decision looked genius!  The floodlights from Old Anniesland were burning brightly and picking up the dark red sphere in the gloom was north of tricky.

Yash finished things off with two wickets in over 36, adding to a run out he executed in the same over, this after Stiffy had bowled the penultimate over in his socks!  [Ed: good astro-turf admin!]  The match saw the 18s comfortable winners by 134 runs after they'd posted 180 for 0 with Mikey top-scoring with an unbeaten 96.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Perhaps astonishingly after yesterday's latest monsoon-like weather the Under 13s managed to get a game this evening down at New Cambusdoon against Ayr in a rescheduled league match.  It was playable, and good to get a game in, but - boy - it was chilly!  Brrrr.....  The game itself was a decent affair with the home side sneaking across the finish line with just seven balls in hand, and winning by five wickets.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Alasdair Thomson [posted 28/08/12]

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing, yesterday, of Alasdair Thomson.  Alasdair was a life-long member of Poloc Cricket Club and, in his later years, was a near ever-present at matches at Shawholm where he sat in his usual seat just inside the front door of the clubhouses watching whatever game was in progress and engaging in conversation whoever came in and out.  Alasdair also served the club for many years as scorer.  A keen supporter of junior cricket at the club he donated a trophy - The Alasdair Thomoson Trophy - to be awarded annually, to the most successful junior team.  It goes without saying perhaps, but Alasdair - "Noddy" as he was affectionately known to many if not all - will be greatly missed.  Alasdair's funeral will take place at Woodside Crematorium in Paisley on Thursday at 4pm.  The club's condolences go to Alasdair's brother and his wider family.

11s lose to Prestwick [posted 14/08/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 11s played Prestwick this evening in a rescheduled league match.  The game was, as ever, good fun - and played in great spirit - but saw the 11s lose out to a much older and more experienced opposition.  The margin of victory reflected this, the youngsters managing just 6 runs off the bat in reply to Prestwick's 101!  But we aren't concerned given the very - very - young side that's appearing at this age-group this year.  A positive again was the guys' straight bowling: only 16 runs conceded in wides which is encouraging.  And in time they'll be fine....  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

The last time this happened was the 29th of April 2005.  That's over seven years ago.  What are were talking about?  Answer: defeat by Uddingston in a junior match, that's what.  And a comprehensive thumping it was too.  85 for 6 was cruised past with seven overs left by the home side in tonight's Under 13 league match at Bothwell Castle Policies.  And, with the home 18s match against the Dark Side being a wash out readers, all we have to report on is a defeat, with the 13s now well-established batting woes to the fore yet again.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Despite posting 223 batting first in today's Sunday League match against Queen's Park at Bothwell Castle Policies, the Panthers somehow managed to lose,.....inside 31 overs!  Yikes.  Mikey's and Matt's knocks (68 and 48 respectively), and the cameos from Lewis (38) and Cammy (20*), were to no avail as poor bowling from a "quirky" bowling line-up let the BCP tenants win comfortably.  For QPCC, Uddy's Amir Gul top-scored with 95, with 41 from Malik thrown in too.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

League tables [posted 11/08/12]

We've updated league tables online - the 'Holmboys win over top-of-the-table Meikleriggs will see them move to the top of the table, whilst the 'Loc's defeat sees them stay in fifth, but with the clubs below them closing the gap.

Oh yeh!,....and oh dear! [posted 11/08/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

Another Saturday and two more senior games played,.....in the sunshine!  The 'Holmboys continued their great run beating a table-topper oppo' for the third week in a row and finding themselves topping the table come Saturday night.  Four on the bounce - great stuff.  Meikleriggs was the oppo' and the guys sneaked home by a single wicket.  There was a "4-for" for Doogie and 32 from Lexy in the run-chase.  Meanwhile over in Paisley a third consecutive batting shambles saw the 'Loc slump to defeat chasing just 182 to beat Ferguslie.  This week the top score was just 27 as the top order again failed - 23 for 3, then 65 for 6!  Ouch.  114 was all that was mustered eventually.  The 'Loc are now right in the scrap at the foot of the table.  There are match reports online (here and here), match scorecards (here and here) and updated stat's

Under 15s bounce back [posted 10/08/12]

WDJCU_logo

Just two days after their humbling at the town named toy, the 15s were back in league tonight, with the Ferguslie|Kelburne combo' side the opposition.  And the good news is that the match saw a home win, by 9 runs.  Batting first the 'Locsters posted just 95 - this after being 59 for 1 in the seventh over, and then 70 for 2 in the tenth - but managed to defend this, taking eight visitor wickets into the bargain.  Abtaha grabbed a "3-for", and Stouty a remarkable six (yes, 6!) stumpings.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Two 'Locsters in junior international action [posted 09/08/12]

Abtaha Maqsood was in action again today, playing in two T20s against Ireland Women Under 17s at Stirling.  Meanwhile Ross Armour made his second Scotland Under 15 appearance of the week in today's European championship match against The Netherlands.  Unfortunately both were on losing sides, but this takes nothing away from their achievements - and the club's pride in their selections.  Well done both!

Under 15s lose at Toytown [posted 08/08/12]

WDJCU_logo

Tonight saw the re-arranged Under 15 match with the Dark Side at Toytown.  In hindsight picking a date when Rosco, Stouty, Lewis, Finn, CJ and Kess weren't around wasn't particularly bright, but you reschedule games in the hope such things don't happen.  As it was, therefore, it was a more inexperienced side than usual that made the short trip to Towtown, and on a glorious night - weather-wise - the game saw the 15s lose by over 100 runs.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Under 18 cup [posted 06/08/12]

Cricket Scotland tossed a coin this afternoon to determine the winner of the Under 18 Scottish Cup tie - five times scheduled and five times washed out - against Glasgow Accies.  The result was a "win" for Accies.  Hey-ho.  Unfortunately that's twice in two seasons the club's had a junior side bundled out of a national cup competition on a coin toss after last season West of Scotland CC progressed in the Under 15 competition when a coin fell down on the wrong side!

Tonight's home Under 13 match with Renfrew has been cancelled.  Yesterday's and overnight heavy showers have left the wicket for tonight's match saturated and the groundstaff do not think it will be playable by game time. The rescheduled Under 18 Scottish Cup match at Glasgow Accies - the fifth time of trying to play this game - is also off.  Cricket Scotland will now toss a coin to decide which club progresses.

We've updated league tables online - the 'Holmboys win over top-of-the-table Whitehaugh saw them move to joint top of the table with Saturday coming's opponents Meikleriggs, whilst the 'Loc's home win saw them move up a place to fifth.

Today saw home and away matches with Kelburne - the 'Loc were at home, the 'Holmboys away in Paisley.  And the great news is that both won!  The 'Holmboys continued their great run with victory by 26 runs under the D/L method against Whitehaugh, the 'Loc's win was much closer - just 7 runs - as they defended 116 at home.  Wow!

With the Under 15s' home match cancelled because of more rain, the Under 11s were the only junior side in action tonight.  East Kilbride were the oppo' at Torrance House.  [Ed: a.k.a. Panthers stroll to win in the Evening League [posted 31/07/12]

WDCU_logo

Another evening of pleasant cricket took place at the old ground tonight as the Evening League match with East Kilbride was played.  The visitors won the toss and skipper Hunter decided to have a bat.  With wickets falling pretty regularly, and being shared around the five bowlers used, 81 for 9 was posted.  "Veteran" Brian Kampman top-scored for the Torrance House side, with Kampman Jnr. chipping in with 13 not out.

In the Panthers' reply, an unbeaten 40 from Saif saw him continue his good form, and the side romped home inside ten overs.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

International cap [posted 30/07/12]

Congratulations are due to Ross Armour who won his fourth Scotland Under 15 cap yesterday in a low-scoring defeat against Durham.  Rosco top-scored with 15, but the Scots' 107 all out proved too few as their hosts at Consett & District CC ran out winners by four wickets.

18s win at Whitehaugh [posted 30/07/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18s continued in their winning ways by defeating Kelburne at Whitehaugh this evening.  The league was played in perfectly pleasant evening sunshine despite a day of pretty sharp showers.  Winning the toss, Pasty inserted the home side who were then restricted to just 35 in just under their allotted twenty overs, with all the 18s bowlers bowling tidily.  Then, in the run-chase, 24 not out from Saif anchored the seven-wicket win.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Following in the spike steps [sic!] of the Shawholm XI 24 hours previously, the Panthers made it back-to-back league wins with victory today at King George V Playing Field against Renfrew.  The home side made 221 for 3 batting first, with Aslam top-scoring with a well-compiled 122 - well batted - but this wasn't enough as the Panthers chased down 222 to win inside 34 overs.

Stouty was in the runs again with 67, Glenton ended with an unbeaten 64 and Stiffy contributed 32.  Another win then, good to get some more cricket in, and pleasing to see everyone have a bowl and the youngsters contributing.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

League tables [posted 28/07/12]

We've updated league tables online - the 'Loc continue to be sixth after today's league games, Weirs win over Kelburne helping extend the gap between Poloc and the Whitehaugh club.  In the Reserve League, the 'Holmboys win over top-of-the-table St. Ninian's saw them move up a place to fourth, and knocked their opponents off the top.

Two-on-the-spin for the 'Holmboys as the 'Loc suffer another cancellation [posted 28/07/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

There was home Saturday league cricket action at Shawholm today as St. Ninian's visited in the CSL Reserve League.  And after last week's encouraging win over The Tryst, the 'Holmboys made it two-in-two by chasing 137 to beat their Ayrshire rivals today.  Five wickets were lost in the run-chase, Elliott's unbeaten 40 being the stand-out knock and following Rusty's 10-5-14-1 bowling display.  Disappointment, however, was again the story of day for the 'Loc as Prestwick called off their CSL game after overnight rain. A match report, updated stat's and the 'Holmboys' match scorecard are online.  There are also updated league tables online.

The Under 11s were the only junior side in action tonight after Renfrew conceded the Under 15 game (see below).  The 11s' oppo' were Ayr, with the game down in Alloway.  Batting first a bigger Ayr side posted net 119, a total the 11s struggled to better as they lost wickets at regular intervals.  They finished just net 6, but another good step in these youngsters' progression.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

After getting back into Evening League action on Thursday night down at Inverclyde, the Panthers made another return to league action today, this time in the Sunday League.  In pretty bleak and chilly conditions, and in near continuous drizzle, the side saw off the challenge from Active Life Club, chasing down 208 to win.  The successful run-chase was perfectly timed, the finish line being crossed in the 39th over.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

The James Gang win, Matt's Mob lose! [posted 21/07/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

Stenhousemuir were the club's opposition in both 1st XI and 2nd XI league matches today.  At Shawholm David James came out of retirement and chaperoned an extremely young 'Holmboys side to the win against The Tryst.  Calum Stout top-scored with 78, as the side posted 190, before the wickets were shared out amongst the bowlers to record a great win.  No fewer than five Under 15s were in the side fielded which just adds to the achievement.  In Larbert meanwhile it wasn't such good news as the 'Loc slumped to 15 for 5 before eventually posting just 87, on a tricky damp, green wicket.  And though the boys took five Stennie wickets in the second innings, the home side reached their target in the 28th over.

Disappointment, and no better example of the consequence of winning a toss.  There are reports online (1st XI match, 2nd XI match), updated stat's and scorecards (1st XI here, 2nd XI here).  There are also updated league tables online.

15s win, 11s lose in Friday night juniors games [posted 20/07/12]

The Under 11s and 15s were both in action tonight.  The Under 15s made their second trip to Glenpark - this time in the league - whilst the Under 11s hosted the city's second-best club, West of Scotland, at Shawholm.  The 15s returned with the win points in a nail-biter, winning by 2 runs defending just 81, whilst our youngest side were again beaten - but again not disgraced - by an older, stronger, West side.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

The Panthers were back in Evening League action tonight after exactly a calendar month of inactivity.  The opposition was Inverclyde Comets, the venue Gourock Park.  And it turned out that this was a first for everyone.  Not one of the Panthers XI had played there before.  The game itself was played in great spirits [Ed: reminds you cricket matches can, in fact, be good fun!] and the Panthers ran out easy winners.

Restricting the home side to 68 for 3, Davie Armour and Flanners then knocked off the runs in exactly ten overs.  Whisper it, but the Foreman hit a maximum!  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

What a pleasure it is to report that two games were scheduled for today, and both were played!  And what adds the icing onto this particular cake is that both games saw 'Locster wins!  The Under 13s travelled to Hughenden to play the Hillhead|Weirs combined side, and came back having secured a comprehensive victory.  101 for 4 was too many for their hosts who could managed just 35.  Meanwhile at Shawholm, high-flying Drumpellier were the visitors but couldn't chase 124 to beat the 18s, finishing 40 runs short.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

The Under 11s were, again, the only side to avoid a cancellation this evening as the 15s saw their home game against Prestwick cancelled.  Hopes were high, however, that a trip to the Ayrshire coast to play the Prestwick Under 11s would yield some warmth and sunshine.  Ahem, eh, nope.  The 11s were greeted by a black cloud of large black cloud proportions and drizzle.  And the game itself was little more cheerful.  Including a heavy downpour that drove the players from the ground, the 11s were on the end of another heavy defeat, this time by 97 runs.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Matches off [posted 13/07/12]

Tonight's home Under 15 match is off.  As trailed in the news item below on the state of the ground, it has simply not been possible to prepare a wicket safe to play on in the time we've had at our disposal - and given the conditions - since the last of the heavy rains on Wednesday.  We will, however, be running a net practice for the Under 15 team selected at the ground from 5pm.  All players selected should come to this if they can.  Also cancelled is Saturday's home Scottish Cup group stage match against Carlton, the battle to prepare a playable wicket having been beaten by lack of time, as well as lack of some decent wind and sunshine, and despite the huge efforts of the groundstaff.

Teams [posted 12/07/12]

There are two senior matches scheduled this weekend.  Saturday's two matches are the Scottish Cup group stage match against Carlton at home, and the Western Cup match against Nunholm in Dumfries.  The teams are online now.  The home game going ahead is subject to a decision on the state of the wicket after the last week's heavy rain.  There are also teams selected for tomorrow's Friday night junior fixtures: the home-and-away Under 11 and 15 matches with Prestwick.

Ground update [12/07/12]

Today, Thursday, saw work able to be started on the ground for the first time in days.  The lying water that was, literally, everywhere was no more by evening and a new wicket had been cut and had some rolling.  The outfield was also cut.  Tomorrow will see more work able to be done, including more rolling and the outfield getting another cut.  A junior was also cut with an eye on Friday evening's scheduled home Under 15 match.  As would be expected however, and as can be seen from this evening's photo's taken of the senior wicket that's been cut (below), the playability of the square remains to be determined.  Both for Friday's junior match, and Saturday's Scottish Cup match.  We've been in touch with both opposing clubs (Prestwick and Carlton respectively) and both are aware of where we are.  A decision on the junior match will be taken around lunchtime, and on tomorrow's Scottish Cup match in the evening.

Forgotten internationalists [posted 11/07/12]

What else to do on a rainy day,.....or should that be month (!), other than some website admin'.  As our regular visitor will know we've had an "Club honours" page for some time, and on this are listed the club's internationalists.  Well, here's a thing - and many thanks to Neil Leitch for sending on the information - it seems we were missing two!  Not one, but two.  That said an excuse might be that they both represented Scotland only the once, and both did so a long, long, time ago.  The two are David Nicoll who, whilst playing at Poloc as Professional, represented Scotland in 1904 against South Africa at Raeburn Place.  And, before Nicoll, Reginald Longley won his cap in 1890, against a Shrewsbury XI at Hamilton Crescent.  Thanks again to Neil, wonder if there are any others.....

More water pic's! [posted 11/07/12]

It would seem your Webmaster wasn't the only cameraman down at the ground today - we've been sent a few pic's from someone else who was there amidst the water!  Have a look in the Gallery.

State of the ground [posted 11/07/12]

The pictures below were taken today - Wednesday - at Shawholm.  They show the extent of the waterlogging that exists at the ground.  The square remains saturated with water under both the sheeting and mobile covers.  Groundstaff also continue to be unable to get on to the square to prepare a wicket.  The outfield remains sodden, with large areas of lying water - see the photographs taken with shoes in them!  Today saw further rain which added to the problems.  The weather is, however, looking better over the next couple of days with only light rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday.  However there must remain doubt over matches being played in the next few days.  Tomorrow's hosting of a Western Warriors Under 18 match has been cancelled, as has Thursday evening's two junior matches (home and away), and Sunday's hosting of the Under 15 Scottish Cup.  The hard fact is that, aside five junior matches, there has not been a completed senior match at the ground since the CSL match against Ferguslie on the 2nd of June!    And, apart from last Friday's Under 11 home match, by this Friday there will have been no match at all played at the ground for eighteen days.  Our ground-staff under Les' Ingram-Brown continue to do all that's humanly possible towards getting games played, but to no avail.  Their efforts are to be applauded and we hope that, as much for their sake, the weather improves soon.

11s lose out, but at least get a game in! [posted 06/07/12]

The Under 11s got only their third match in tonight, when local rivals Weirs came calling.  In decent conditions the game ended up a little one-sided in terms of the result with the very young 'Locster eight losing by 59 runs.  But looking behind the numbers there were again real positives: the wide count was one for a start, with Weirs bowling 34, twice as many as the 11s did.  And of course the result is, at this level, the straight bowlers get hit, the wide bowlers don't!  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Today's Scottish Cup match at Glenpark against Greenock never got started.  With rain falling, the ump's called the match off just before half two after having made more unsuccessful checks of the deck than the Captain of the Titantic!

It was the inevitable decision, and didn't appear a surprise to any of the 22 potential participants.  In fact the only folk "stunned" by the decision appeared to be those in whose day the game would've been up-and-running on time and played to a finish without a second's thought.    Note to self: pack rose-coloured spectacles next week.....

The Under 13s lost out to Ferguslie for the second time this season, and for the second time at Meikleriggs.  And a bit like that first match CJ bunted a retirement-inducing quick-fire 30-odd only to then watch the rest of the batting order struggle to reach 77.  This after Ferguslie had posted 104 for 9 batting first. Meanwhile at Shawholm the 18s defeated Uddingston, 144 for 7 being too many for the visitors who were bowled out for 54 on what was a poor surface.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

15s crash out in cup quarter-finals [posted 20/06/12]

ECB_logo

The Under 15s followed in the Under 18s' footsteps of Monday.  By which we mean they made a huge total,.....and lost!  The same afflictions that beset their elders cost the 15s dear in their defeat to Prestwick in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals: too many extras, poor - nay, horrid - bowling, and lacklustre fielding resulting in them having to chase a mammoth total.  157 to win it was, but the 15s, despite some late innings fireworks, couldn't chase this down and finished 138 all out with three overs to go.  Match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Panthers somehow snatch defeat from victory! [posted 19/06/12]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers were back in Evening League action tonight and despite bowling out the normally free-scoring Langside College for 103 inside nineteen overs, the boys somehow managed to lose the game.  To say a batting collapse didn't help matters might be the understatement of understatements, but when batters two to six inclusive manage just 4 runs between'em, and there are two ducks to come including a "hit wicket" you know the cricketing gods weren't on our side!  As it turned out the boys finished 4 runs short with an over still to bowl - criminal!  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Don Haines [posted 19/06/12]

The club was saddened today to hear of the passing of Don Haines, President of the club in 1979 and 1980.  In an email to the club, Don's wife Gwynneth and daughter Gillian wrote: "We are sad to inform you that Don passed away on Friday the 15th of June 2012 in St. Andrews.  We thought that some of your long standing members might like to know that his funeral service will take place on Monday the 25th of June 2012 at 1.30pm at Kirkcaldy Crematorium; a notice will appear in The Herald newspaper tomorrow, Wednesday.  We would be grateful if you could post a notice in the clubhouse and on your website."  In replying, the club passed on its condolences to both Mrs Haines and Gillian.  Don Haines, as well as being a former President of Poloc, was Chairman of the Scottish Cricket Union between 1987 and 1990, as well as having been a long-serving player for the club.

Juniors come up blank [posted 18/06/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s entertained West of Scotland at Shawholm this evening.  The very young - and much depleted - side were second-bst on the night as a good West side ran out comfortable winners.  Meanwhile over at Meikleriggs the 18s were similarly runners-up in their two-horse race.  The difference over in Paisley was that scoring 139 wasn't enough to secure the win in a march where both sides' bowling and fielding was as bad as the midges were thick!  Truly horrible,.....both!  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

At a cricket ground not so far, far away..... [posted 13/06/12]

One can only wonder how the Southside Extra's intrepid sports reporter might describe tonight's events at Titwood?  Maybe a headline of "Clydesdale batters dominate in junior net practice"?  Or perhaps "It's Titwood for thrills in midweek corporate hockey!"  Who knows, but it'll be interesting to see what newspeak emanates from the Sports Ministry.    What did of course happen was the 'Loc sneaked home off the last ball to win by a run in the latest West League Cup group match: 86 for 6 seeing off - just - 85 all out.

How very pleasing.  There's a fuller match report online, as well as updated stat's and the match scorecard

Coaching times - change [posted 12/06/12]

Given the - encouraging! - numbers that have been attending Under 13s and Under 15s coaching and practice sessions in recent weeks, and to ensure we optimise the time with the players coming along, we've decided to split the group into two.  And so, from tonight, Under 13s will come between 5.30pm and 7pm (the existing stime-slot), byt Under 15s will come from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Double defeat league weekday three! [posted 02/06/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

After last weekend's two good wins against Kelburne, today saw a reversal of fortunes against the other Paisley club, Ferguslie. Over at Meikleriggs, the 'Holmboys lost by a whopping 223 runs as they mustered only 105 chasing 329 to win.  The match at Shawholm, meanwhile, was a much closer affair with the 'Loc slipping to defeat by 23 runs chasing 243 to win their game.  219 all out in the last over at least gave the guys 2 points for getting with 90% of their target, but again it was a game that had been there for the winning at various junctures. There are reports online (1st XI match, 2nd XI match), updated stat's and scorecards (1st XI here, 2nd XI here).  There are also updated league tables online.

11s and 15s both beaten [posted 01/06/12]

The Under 11 and 15 league seasons finally got underway tonight,.....with defeats!    Fielding what might well have been the youngest-ever 'Locster side to take to a field, the 11s were comfortably beaten by Ayr at Shawholm.  The 15s meanwhile were at Langloan where they lost to Drumps. Missing some of their senior players [Ed: rumours of a party taking precedence, though what self-respecting party starts before 9pm?!?] the boys struggled to post a score after losing early wickets and the home side chased the target set.  Match reports and scorecards are online, as are updated stat's.

Rowan Cup exit at Midge Central [posted 31/05/12]

The midges were nearly as big as the two innings' totals in this game as 164 for 6 beat 146 for 6.  East Kilbride were the winners on a dark and dank night at Torrance House in the second round of this season's Rowan Cup, the South Lanarkshire club progressing to the semi's as a result.  Their win owed everything to Bocock's unbeaten 74, with only Singh (36) lending support.  The "sturdy" Kiwi smoked the wee red sphere over the short boundaries that were on three sides, and didn't really look much like departing.

So another night, and another competitive cup tie, but a second loss.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report

West of Scotland were tonight's winners in a tight West League Cup group match at Shawholm.  Set 111 to win, the 'Loc finished just 2 runs short of their victory target.  Genou bleu batted through for 29 with Coya notching an unbeaten 47 as the boys ran their opponents close.  Just not close enough.  In the West innings Glenton took a "3-for" as the Hamilton Crescent side's total of 110 for 5 was built around Umeed's 54 as he, like Euan, batted through.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Panthers lose in the Greenwood Trophy [posted 29/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers lost out to Neptune this evening in the Greenwood Trophy.  In a high-scoring T20 affair the visitors from Helensburgh racked up 161 batting first, a total the Panthers couldn't surpass as they ended the second innings 133 for 7.  There was a half-century for Josh Crawley who carried his bat for an unbeaten 63, whilst Rusty's 2 for 16 in his four overs was the best of the bowling figures.  The Panthers are in cup action again on Thursday when they travel to Motherwell in the Glasgow Cup.  Tonight's scorecard's online, as are updated stat's.

18s left stranded as 13s win a close one [posted 28/05/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18 league season was meant to have started tonight.  The outfield was freshly shorn, the boundary out and a good, hard, centre wicket prepared.  Sadly however this was as good as it got as East Kilbride called off with everything set up, and the boys ready to go.  What to do?  Answer: impromptu 6s competition!  Meanwhile down at the coast the Under 13s were sneaking home in a tight match against Prestwick, the margin of victory just 4 runs.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Panthers win in the Sunday League to make it a clean-sweep weekend [posted 27/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The Panthers made it "three-from-three" this afternoon as the side secured the club's third win in senior leagues this weekend.  Another gloriously hot day welcomed the Panthers and their oppo' from Renfrew in this Sunday League First Division match.  In the field first [Ed: wow, hot! ] the Panthers quickly made in-roads into the Renfrew batting line-up and would eventually bowl them out for just 115.  Then, in their reply, despite themselves losing three quick, early wickets, the middle order secured the win by five wickets, in the 26th over.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Two good wins on winning Saturday! [posted 26/05/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

As the week's gloriously hot and sunny weather continued there was than just meterological reasons to be cheerful as both senior Saturday XIs recorded league wins over their Kelburne counterparts.  At home the Shawholm boys romped to a four-wicket win as they chased 172 to beat Whitehaugh inside 32 overs.  There were half centuries for Stiffy (66) and Maddy (63*), as well as a "3-for" for Doogie, whilst Rusty and Mushy bowled their twenty overs for just 3- runs all-in.  Over in Paisley the 'Loc posted 255 for 9 batting first with Carl making 101 and Nicky 44.  Then, as the home side were bowled out for 137 there were "4-fors" for both Hari' and Euan.  Two wins: double delight!!  There are reports online (1st XI match, 2nd XI match), updated stat's and scorecards (1st XI here, 2nd XI here).  There are also updated league tables online.

Convincing season-opening win for the 18s [posted 25/05/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 18 season started tonight, and the result was a convincing win for the club's oldest youngsters.  The season-opener was the first round tie in this season's Frank Smith Trophy.  Renfrew were the visitors to a warm and sunny Shawholm where, after winning the toss, Pasty decided to have a bat.  170 for 4 was then racked up with Mike top-scoring with 82 and Elliott chipping in with a cameo 38.  Renfrew were then bowled out for 88, Pasty taking a "5-for".  The win sees the 'Locsters into the next round where they play Prestwick.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Greenock seen off in Rowan Cup [posted 24/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The 'Loc's Rowan Cup campaign got off to a good start tonight [Ed: by which we mean we're still in!] with a win over Greenock down at Glenpark.  The Clydeside ground was looking a picture on another warm and sunny evening, and in a tight match that went nearly down to the wire, the 'Loc boys got home by 11 runs as 111 for 7 was enough to win, Greenock being bowled out for 100 in the nineteenth over.  There were runs for Scotty (31) and wickets (3) and catches (2) for Euan.

And likely we'd better mention Flanners with another sheriff, as well as the Full House of a catch, a stumping and a run out!  The next round sees a match against either East Kilbride or Stenhousemuir.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Under 15s move into the quarters [posted 23/05/12]

Cricket_Scotland_logo

The Under 15s progressed into the quarter-finals of the ECB Under 15 National Club Championship this evening with a 32-run win over Greenock down at Glenpark.

The foundations for the victory were set in the first innings when a hugely important 46 from Akhil Ahmed was the standout innings, his knock being particularly important after Rosco had departed in the third over for 7, and Calum couldn't repeat his pyrotechnics of the last round when he holed out for a cameo 18.  Finn Taylor was the other batter to look settled, and he steered the innings after Akhil's departure.  Then in the reply, Umair's figures of 4-0-9-3 reflected his important contribution, this after Rosco had made amends with the ball, cleaning up dangerman Flack for 18.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.  The next round sees a home match against either Prestwick or Ayr.

Panthers lose in the Evening League at Prestwick [posted 22/05/12]

The Panthers second Evening League outing of 2012 saw them down at Prestwick.  In a relatively one-sided match a much more experienced Prestwick side, their 1st XI less their pro', restricted the Panthers to 68 for 9 batting first, before then knocking off the required runs, three-down, thereafter.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Under 13s thrashed! [posted 21/05/12]

WDJCU_logo

The Under 13s started their Under 13 league campaign at Shawholm tonight in glorious sunshine, but maybe wished that it had been raining!  They were absolutely thrashed by the Dark Side's mini-minor Storm Troopers!  Defeat by no fewer than 102 runs.  Ouch!!  The basic facts of this humiliation are that, batting first, the visiting youngsters from Toytown revelled in the chance to play on a full-sized ground and racked up a formidable 150 for 2.  In reply, the 'Locster 13s crumbled to 48 all out with not one of the batters getting into double figures.  In fact the only double fugures the 13s' players recorded were wides and runs conceded from their bowling.  Ouch indeed!    A match report and scorecard are online, as are updated stat's.

Frank Smith Trophy disappointment,.....again! [posted 20/05/12]

The club's Frank Smith Trophy hoo-doo continued in the "held over" 2011 Finals Day today.  The 18s lost by 4 runs chasing 105 to beat Ferguslie in the semi-final, before the Paisley side romped home in the final that followed against a younger and more inexperienced Prestwick side.  The tale of the semi-final defeat was yet another case of what might have been in this competition.  A match report and scorecard are online, as are stat's, but - for now - safe to say that one bizarre over in the Ferguslie over will live long in the memory, as will the struggle to chase down a total of just over 5-an-over, even though - almost despite themselves - the 18s found themselves needing just 14 runs from the last two overs, and with six wickets in hand, to win, but just couldn't get over the line as over sixteen saw two wickets fall.  Small consolations are maybe that their semi-final was certainly the game of the day, and there were good bowling performances from Cammy (5-1-21-1) and Mikey (5-0-21-3) in particular.  But with the bat, losing Scotty to the third ball he faced wasn't a great start and Pasty (25) and Hari's (18) 43-run partnership was ended in crazy fashion when Hari' smacked Alistair Preston-Jones to mid-on, only for the ball to ricochet off a backing-up Pasty into Preston-Jones's hands!  Unbelievable.  Mikey's better-than-a-run-a-ball 20 was in vain too, as was Stiffy's 12 from fourteen deliveries.  Ah well, there's always next year,.....which starts this Friday with the first round of the 2012 Frank Smith Trophy at Shawholm, Renfrew the visitors.

Two games played, but no wins [posted 19/05/12]

Cricket_Scotland_WDCU_logo_2012

Today finally saw the start of Saturday league cricket with two games against Prestwick.  At the Henry Thow Oval the 'Holmboys were beaten by six wickets as the home side chased down 167.  A young and inexperienced side did well enough batting first, Doogie top-scoring with 55 batting on one leg as he played through the pain barrier.  Meanwhile at Shawholm, the 'Loc lost by 16 runs as they failed in their run-chase looking to surpass Prestwick's 205 all out.  The Ayrshire side were 22 for 4 early on, but pro', Butt, made the most of a life whilst still in the teens, to go on to score the 101 that was the basis for his side posting the total they did.  Glenton grabbed a "3-for" and took three good catches, whilst in the run-chase Carly (44), Scotty (31) and Pasty (26) all got starts but couldn't go on.  [Ed: 24 wides didn't help either!]  There are reports online (1st XI match, 2nd XI match), updated stat's and scorecards (1st XI here, 2nd XI here).

Narrow defeat in West League Cup opener [posted 16/05/12]

WDCU_logo

The 'Loc's West League Cup campaign got underway tonight in the damp, dark and cold conditions that were Shawholm!  On another bitterly chilly night that saw spectators inside not out, and coffees sold not cold drinks, the game saw Clydesdale pay a visit from deepest, darkest Crossmyloof.  Batting first the visitors were restricted to 95 for 9, with Euan Sheridan taking a "3-for", but this proved 11 runs more than the 'Loc could muster in reply as Zeeshan Bashir ("4-for") combined with Majid Haq to choke the supply of runs.

Carly top-scored with 22, as - like Clydesdale - the batters found spin difficult to get away on the slow, low, wicket.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

15s see off the Dark Side in the Under 15 Scottish Cup [posted 06/05/12]

ECB_logo

It was an unusual happening at the ground this morning - Sunday morning cricket that didn't involve "Kwik Cricket".  The occasion?  The first round of the ECB Under 15 National Club Championship, and yet another derby clash with the "noisy neighbours".  And noisy they were too in the field, first up - until that is the run-rate passed 4, then 5, then 6, then 7-an-over.  That kind of quietened things down a tad.  And the cause?  None other than - to a very large extent - a buntalicious knock from former Stormtrooper Calum Stout who smacked a retirement-inducing 53 from just 24 deliveries to turn a pretty good first innings effort into a winning one.  155 for 3 was posted, a target the Dark Side batters finished 34 runs shy of to see the 'Locster 15s into the next round, and an away day to Greenock.  The scorecard's online, as are updated junior stat's and a match report.

1st XI cricket made it first appearance today at Shawholm, along with coloured kit, black screens and pink balls!  What would the buffties make of it we wonder?!?  As it was the garb of those wearing the Poloc kit was likely the least of the 'Loc supporters' worries come end of play as Greenock had run out comfortable winners by 86 runs.  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Weekend teams [posted 04/05/12]

With comfortably more players unavailable than available this weekend, fielding two senior elevens has proved a tad tricky, and selections were only finally firmed up late this evening.  [Ed: apologies therefore to the Fourth Estate for the non-publication of the usual Press Release, but circumstances dictated this wasn't possible.]  Saturday sees two cup matches with Greenock visiting Shawholm for a Scottish Cup section match, and the 'Holmboys making the short trip across the road to Toytown to take on Titwood in the Western Cup.  Included in the line-ups are two players dragged out of retirement and two making Saturday senior cricket debuts.  The teams are online now.

Two Killie foursomes get two net practices in! [posted 04/05/12]

Whilst what appeared to be four Killie seniors braved Antarctic conditions at Shawholm this evening, another four players from the Ayrshire club - this time Under 11s [Ed: or mostly ] - got some practice in of their own courtesy of the 'Locster 11s who took it in turns to bowl to, and field for, the visitors from down the M77.  It actually - and somewhat oddly - seemed that Killie had more parents and coaches than players!?!  To the game: a full T20 under "pairs cricket" rules was played, and the Killie 4 came out on top, comfortably, winning by 73 [net] runs.  There's a scorecard online, and the first Under 11 stat's of a new season.

Panthers find out they're in another cup competition [posted 02/05/12]

The club found out last night that - completely unknown to it - the Panthers eleven is, in fact, playing in two cup competitions this season.  In addition to the knockout Greenwood Trophy, the side is an entrant in the round-robin league cup-style Glasgow Cup.  And the only reason we found out was that Whitehaugh - the Panthers first opponents - were expecting to play.....last night!  Yikes.  In a 'phone call, and in messages, to Kelburne the club's apologised for the no-show in Paisley on the warmest night of the season (!), explaining that it wasn't an oversight, it was simply that no-one was aware that the Panthers were in the cup competition.  The match will be rescheduled - thanks to Kelburne for their understanding.  The Glasgow Cup draw's online now however.

After the Under 15Bs and Under 15s got their seasons off to losing starts last week, the affliction turned into an epidemic as the Under 13s followed suit this evening, turning victory into defeat in the Scottish Cup at Meikleriggs against nine-player Ferguslie.  After gifting the home side no fewer than 20 runs in extras in the first innings and allowing the Paisley youngsters to post an improbable 92, the 'Locsters then somehow let the game slip through their collective grasps as dot followed at the death in the second innings.  The side would eventually finish 6 runs short and Ferguslie progressed to the next round.  The scorecard's online, as are updated junior stat's and a match report.

The Panthers - the club's Sunday and Evening League side - made the entrance in the former today.  On the basis that "it can only get better", the side's season opener was Victoria away at Springburn Park!  In the cold.  The very cold.  On the plus side it looked like the grass had been cut this year, and only one Police van drove round during play.  Mind you, the game lasted so short a time, maybe HM Constabulary came round again but the guys had gone home!  The summary of events is that the Panthers lost by nine wickets.  But as ever there's more to it than that!  The scorecard's online, as are updated stat's and a match report.

Senior season starts with Western Cup win [posted 28/04/12]

A new season of senior cricket started today at the old ground.  First up, though, thanks are due to Ground Convenor Les' Ingram-Brown and Groundsman Adam Richardson for presenting the policies in such magnificent conditions given the recent weather.  And on this opening day of play, the sun shone and the place looked top-notch.  The game wasn't too bad either, with the 'Holmboys beating their compatriots from Kelburne by five wickets in this first Western Cup group stage match.  The scorecard's online, as are stat's and a match report.

Under 15s lose pre-season friendly [posted 27/04/12]

The day after the Under 15B side lost their league season opener at Old Anniesland it was the club's other Under 15 side that took to the paddock down in Alloway against hosts Ayr in a pre-season friendly.  Batting first again the 'Locsters posted just 71 for 9 in their twenty overs, with Rosco top-scoring with 26.  In reply Ayr reached their target of 72 for the loss of just four wickets, and with over five overs to spare.  The result was a bit harsh on Akhil Ahmed who returned bowling figures of 4-1-10-3, including "two-in-two", but the batting frailties of 24 hours earlier that repeated themselves in the first innings proved costly.  The scorecard's online, as are the first junior stat's of a new season and a report.

Scottish Cup match off [posted 27/04/12]

Tomorrow's second group stage cottish Cup tie at Scroggie Park against Falkland has been called off after the week's wet weather put paid to any chance of the Fife club's ground being playable.  The call was made late on Friday afternoon after every effort was made, but to no avail.  Our thanks to Falkland for keeping us "in the loop" as regards ground conditions throughout the week - much appreciated.  For the avoidance of doubt, the home Western Cup tie against Whitehaugh is, however, on.

Season 2012 actually starts! [posted 26/04/12]

It was Baltic, but it was cricket,.....of sorts.  Rumours of a cricket match actually taking place have reached the website.  The location was Old Anniesland [Ed: though it might as well have been Antarctica!], the opposition was GHK and the match was the season opener in the Under 15B league.  The result was a bit like the weather too, i.e. bitter!  84 all out was all the 'Locsters could muster, a total the home batters - just two of them! - romped past with ease.  The scorecard's online, as are the first junior stat's of a new season, and there's even a report of sorts.

The eaglet has landed [posted 24/04/12]

The club's "Overseas Amateur" for Cricket Scotland competitions has arrived safely in Glasgow.  Nineteen year old South African all-rounder Glenton Stuurman (pictured left at the club this afternoon) comes to the club for the first time in 2012 courtesy of a recommendation from Garry Hampson, Head Coach at the South West Districts First Class set up where Glenton's in the Academy.  Hampo was, as most will remember, Coaching Professional at the club in 2006 and 2007, and the connection with him has continued since.  Glenton joins our two other overseas players - Carl Huyser and Mike Allcoack - for a season of cricket, Scottish-style.  [Ed: which right now involves multiple jumpers and rain hats!]  Welcome Glenton!

Sunday's match off [posted 21/04/12]

After today's Scottish Cup match failed to finish, Sunday's friendly with Langside College has also fallen foul of the weather.  Heavy late afternoon rain put paid to any chance of play, and so for the second Sunday in a row the ground will be cricketless.  And after two scheduled weekends of cricket we've still to finish a single match!

Rain's the winner in Scottish Cup opener [posted 21/04/12]

Cricket_Scotland_logo

As those of you who follow the club's Twitter feed will know, today's first group stage match in this season's Scottish Cup ended in an abandonment as the game at Grange Loan against reigning SNCL and Murgitroyd T20 champ's Carlton was eventually washed out.

Inserting the home side on a damp deck a young and inexperienced 'Loc side restricted their hosts to 173 for 7 in the 34 overs bowled in the first innings.  Then in the second innings - with the 'Loc chasing a D/L-adjusted 182 to win, the game was called off after just three overs with the score on 15 for 0.  The rain shower that eventually killed this one off was about the fifth or sixth that had interrupted proceedings and by the time it had dumped its load the decision to shake hands was undoubtedly the correct one.  Thanks to the ump's and Carlton boys for making every effort to get the game completed but it just wasn't to be.  Positives nonetheless were to be found in the way the youngsters weren't overawed by their illustrious opponents, and by their application.  Main downside: Doogie's injury that saw him hobble off after just five overs.  Match report online, as are updated stat's and the scorecard

Schools coaching programme kick starting [posted 19/04/12]

The club's partnership with The Community Coaching Initiative coaching charity continues, and today sees the start of the schools-based coaching programme.  Shawlands Primary is the location for today's first session, the first in a series of some 67 sessions that will see cricket introduced and coached to boys and girls in eleven schools.  This part of the club's work in its community is vital, coming as it does at the start of a new outdoor cricket season and meaning that the link between "taster" and introductory sessions for children, and being able to play in real games, is tangible.  Have a look at the full programme online.

In addition to its own programme, organised with the assistance of Glasgow Sport's Active Schools Co-ordinators, and in conjunction with The Community Coaching Initiative, the club is also a partner in the South Glasgow Cricket Scotland Summer Squad Community Coach.  Along with Weirs CC, Clydesdale CC, Cricket Scotland and East Renfrewshire Council, the club is part-funding a Community Coach, Robbie Stewart, who is delivering introductory cricket sessions in a further group of Glasgow City, and East Renfrewshire, schools this summer term.

Gone! [posted 08/04/12]

Big thanks to another work party - today saw Rusty, a brace of Jayaratnes, Sanchez, Flanners, Dan, NJ and Youngy deal with the last of that pile of earth.  As the madness continued, Dan had the labourers literally running with their wheel-barrows announcing it was pre-season fitness work!  Then there was some kind of competition between said Mr Walton and Foreman Flanagan.  Flanners allegedly won this, but only Dan can claim to have also built a bridge and repaired a barrow on the day!  Thanks to everyone who's helped out this week in clearing up the net bay area.

Pre-season ground work continues [posted 04/04/12]

A small team of earth removers (!) were in action today at the club, as that pile of earth began to be reduced in size.  Having sat where it is since the all-weather net bays were installed in 2010, the job of clearing what was the spoil has finally began.  And for the curious, yes, Les' was correct - it isn't a one-man, one-day job!  All help gratefully received if anyone's got some spare time to help: many spades and barrows make light work!  Get in touch with Keith Young if you can help.

Saturday afternoons at the 'Loc [posted 28/01/12]

It was like any other winter Saturday afternoon at the 'Loc today with Messrs. Duncanson and Martin in charge of Buffties Corner.  Tranny on, the buffties followed the footy scores as they came in.  And it was mixed fortunes for the two likely lads as the Spiders succumbed to Peterhead whilst the 'Gers saw off Hibs.  Also "in da house" on Saturday was Les' Ingram-Brown to whom further thanks are due as he continues to coordinate the hands-on repair work on the ground after the recent storms.  Today saw repairwork to the fencing at the far end of the ground.

GK wins January Medal [posted 14/01/12]

Good to see debutants playing round the policies in today's January Medal - Rusty had his new Christmas sticks, and Peter Stevenson was also on debut.  With Lewis James also making his first medal appearance there were three playing for their handicaps.  As the newbies were going about their business GK was going about his - and his net 62 was enough to see off Youngy by virtue of a better inward half.  Third-place in the comp' was bagged by Bean with net 64.  Next up on the winter golf section's fixture card is the Members and Guests Day on February the 11th.

Ten years online [posted 03/01/12]

Hurricane Bawbag's revenge [posted 03/01/12]

Smashed_clubhouse_clock

After yesterday's great efforts at tidying up after Hurricane Bawbag and the recent flooding, today dawned to find the evidence of Bawbag's revenge at Shawholm.  On the plus side there's no fundamental damage been done to the clubhouse.  However there has been significant structural damage to parts of the building as well as to the policies and ground equipment.  You can see pictures of the damage in the gallery.  The clubhouse clock and mounting were found smashed in the spectator seating area, there were roof tiles strewn around the back car park, the telephones are down, two sightscreens are irreparably damaged (one completely smashed), there are numberous trees down around the ground, spectator benches have been over-turned, etc.

Easy fund-raising and Rag-bag news [posted 03/01/12]

easyfundraising.co.uk

Kenneth Robertson says our last Rag-bag uplift just before Christmas raised £159 for the club which is great.  In addition we've raised £109.48 through easyfundraising.org.uk.  Remember it's a dead easy way to raise money for the club.  Kenneth Robertson is the man behind the club's registration with easyfundraising.org.uk which allows anyone who registers as a supporter of the club to automatically generate cash for the club through their usual online shopping.

Whether it's Tesco or M&S, whether you're buying something on Amazon or you're online looking for car insurance, there are literally hundreds if not thousands of online retailers who are participating.  In short, when you are going to shop online you first go to easyfundraising.org.uk and then link from there to the retailer's site.  Then everything you buy generates a cash percentage to Poloc!  How good's that - and Kenneth keeps us up-to-date with the cash we generate.  The first step is to register at easyfundraising.org.uk as a supporter of Poloc - it takes two minutes and then you're up-and-running.  As you can see how much you've generated yourself too as the easyfundraising.org.uk website shows you your own fund-raising.  It's genius - go do it now.  I wonder how much we can raise?

Thanks [posted 02/01/12]

A big thanks to the guys down at Shawholm today helping out getting the sightscreens back upright and in to position after they were "repositioned", a.k.a. blown over, by Hurricane Bawbag.  Messrs. Flanagan, Ingram-Brown, James, Lauder, Walton and Young (x2) take a bow.  Easy as it may sound, it wasn't - think heavy lifting in the Somme!  And thanks too, to Andrea and Laura Young for a big cleaning effort in the pro's house getting it spick and span for the winter.
